I would use P21s Total Auto Wash http://p21s.com/products/bis_taw.html or http://www.detailedimage.com/P21S-M1...000-ml-Kit-S1/ (since its safe for aluminum, rubber, wire harness, plastic, paint) use brushes and just a garden hose. No need for a pressure washer. if you have a air compressor blow out the water with air. Then use 303 http://www.detailedimage.com/303-M2/...-P12/16-oz-S1/ on all rubber and plastic parts. The engine will look like new!

The only thing that will make a engine perform better is a tune up. Spark plugs, new air cleaner and a high grade gas like shell. Cleaning an engine will not cause the engine to perform better.

I use a tooth brush and Simple Green, and then carefully rinse using my hose nozzle at a low volume rinse spray setting.
To keep my engine from getting dirt buildup, I detail it with a damp hand towel usually before I wash the car.

Correct. I think maybe OP is confusing cleaning the engine exterior with products or gasoline brands that claim to clean the engine's interior.
Even so, I like the engine to look reasonably clean. I just wipe down accessible areas with a bit of spray detailer on a rag.
