Hi guys, just wanted to say hello. I`ve been lurking here on and off for a long time. I`m new to Porsche but been learning a lot about them from this site. I`m planning on purchasing a preowned the 997, Probably a non turbo 6spd car. The prices seem to be all over the place but lots of nice ones to chose from!

Prices are all over the place. One indicator with respect to price is almost 100% consistent though. Not saying accurate but consistent. Come here for a price check on a car you've found and somebody will tell you you're about to overpay. Just be ready for it no matter how good of a deal you think it is.
When I started looking this time last yr, there was a VERY limited inventory. the good ones started coming out of hibernation in april... if you see something you like, hop on it. there is a lot of competition on the better optioned cars in the more popular colors.
The best part about buying a Porsche is the search, research, and looking for the right one. Depending on age, you may want to have budget for the following after you purchase;
1. Tires - $1000 to $1300 depending on brand.
2. iMS bearing replacement if car has smaller bearing. $1800
3. Rear main seal, if IMS bearing is to be replaced.
4. Clutch in the event IMS bearing is to be replaced.
5. Water pump - genuine Porsche part $400, plus labor or save and DIY. About every 25000 miles.
6. Car cover
7. Good wax
8. Porsche Club of America Membership!
9. And list goes on!

Sandwedge is spot on!
My advice is, if you have tight specifications of what you want (i.e. color, model, transmission, Chrono, Full Leather, etc.), don't loose the car over a couple grand. One week after driving it, you won't care or remember the extra couple grand! But loosing the near perfect car, will be remembered until you find and buy the next near perfect one.
Be patient. There are plenty of cars out there. But do not rush. That's always a mistake. Use the Rennlist forum to learn a great deal before you even get close to looking at a car.
Even I, the world's greatest impulse buyer, passed on 2 before finding mine.
I hate the search... Many love it. Do pay for a pre-purchase inspection and don't marry any car till it passes one. All cautions said, seeing mine outside this AM, I am still in awe that it's mine.. Best of luck! Enjoy 2nd to 3rd after you get oil temp :-)
Great advise all ^^^. Like someone said, I spent a good year researching exactly type, brand, color, top color, etc...on sites like this, carmax, auto nation, and others. Once you find the car you want if its ballpark what its worth and you can afford it: pull the trigger or you may regret it. You look back on this time and if you made the right decisions it will be a comfort if not you will be angry for not taking your time and doing a thorough reseacrh. Take care and cant wait to see and hear ya on the forums in the near term future.
Don't settle. Fugue out your must haves. I wasn't sure on my must haves, but I lucked into the options I really wanted even tough I didn't know it at the time.
Chris is right, although for decades I thought "I HAVE to have an S". I found out I didn't.
I found a solid car with a solid "imsb remediated" rebuilt motor ( never blown up), optioned with just enough, and I liked the color. I am in heaven. As dickie fox said in Jerry McGuire "I wish you my kind of success" (paraphrased?)
