Default "burp" valve rises when engine is hot?

Hi All

Is the burp valve on the coolant reservoir supposed to rise on it's own when the engine is at operating temp? Mine always does and I don't know if it is supposed to. It drops back down again when the car is cold.

interesting. FWIW, the only 996 i've been close to was a '01 turbo with overheating issues at a DE. his burp valve worked the same as mine - open when hot, closed when cool. oh well.

I wonder then, how does the burp function work if it rises on it's own anyway?

Works to release air if you raise it while the engine is cold prior to pressure build up.

Releases it to where? Do you need to leave the blue cap off as well?
