I have looked at and driven the gtr. Here is my opinion:
If you want a fast car that drives you... get the gtr
If you like cheap plastic interior's get the gtr
If you love to play video games get the gtr
If you like to impress 15 year old boys get the gtr
BUT
If you want to "Drive" the car get the 911
If you like quality interior's get the 911
If you want "feedback" from what the car is doing get the 911
If you enjoy these 3 senses, The SMELL of the leather as you enter the vehicle, the SOUND of the engine as you start it or accelerate, the FEEL of the steering wheel in your hands and the feel of the brake pedal on your foot as you drive, or the feel of the weight transfer get the 911
If you want a sport car but still would like to take a classy woman out for a nice dinner get the 911
If you want a car with the most comfortable seats of any car where you can drive for hrs get the 911
If you like to join a club and meet some of the nicest people buy a 911 and join the Porsche club in your region!

Both are great cars but the culture behind the brand names is totally different.
They will always be car that's better or faster than yours so it's all personal choice.
The 997 is a more raw type car while the GTR is a technological wonder.
The GTR also seems to appeal more to the "tuner" crowd.
Your not going to see many 40+ year olds hanging out with the fast & furious crowd.

If you have to ask, most definitely the GTR. I always have friends that come to me and say things like "dude I am thinking of getting a new car soon but I'm stuck between a (MB C63 / BMW M6/ Vette) etc. and a 911 and I tell them all the same thing....
"If you have to ask..."
...simply put, I never had to make a choice. I was born in Avon, CT and left the hospital a couple days old in a Guards Red 930T. It's been 911 madness for me ever since. I drove a couple nice cars until I could afford one but once the money is there, 911. My next car will be a 911 TT or GT2 if all goes well.
To answer your question ask wholeheartedly as possible - NEITHER. Get a 997.1TT and have the best of both worlds.

There is certainly a lot of "Grumpy Old Guys" syndrome going on in here... The GT-R doesn't ride as poorly as you'd be led to believe. Is it harder than a Camry? Of course. I'd put it equal with a 911 on PASM sport. Neither will rattle your fillings out, but are harder than some sedan. As for looks, that's completely subjective. To say it looks like a hopped-up Mitsubishi is a little misleading. I had a hopped-up Mitsubishi and looked nothing like that...
Personally I think the latest Ferraris look like garbage, but I appreciate their performance, etc. Just be glad different manufacturers are building competing performance cars - it'll push every body to try a little harder.
If you're not (apparently) 65 years old, the GT-R might be a good car for you.

I've driven the GT-R and its a car that you'll get bored of quickly. Its insanely fast but lacks the luxury or feel that the 911 has.
Drive both and you'll discover this rather quickly...

If you plan to track your car, get the 911. The GTR weight (plus electronics) just kills tires and brakes.
If you are below 40, single and still trolling the bars for 18-30 yr old girls and impress them with winning all the stoplight races, get the GTR.
or go for a 997 turbo.
over 40 or married, see above

I think that's what hooked me the first time I drove a 997! Although I'm finding that a little harder to do the 305's mine came with! :-D Still learning the car a bit so I don't curb check it right away!
