Center Muffler Bypass aka Center Muffler Delete
I have a 2009 C2S manual tranny with 24K on the odometer. It has most of the desireable options minus the Sport Chrono package or PSE features. I took my car in for its 4 year service to a perfomance shop in Atlanta and when I asked the owner if there were any mods he would recommend he mentioned a center muffler bypass aka center muffler delete. His perspective of doing this would be that it would increase HP to the wheels by 8-10 HP and provide a more throaty exhaust sound similar to having the PSE switch turned on all of the time. Before I invest in this mod I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar done and are they happy with it. Thank you in advance for your input.

I have the Sharkwerks bypass. They claim a 19lbs weight reduction and an increase of 12hp over the stock center muffler. I haven't confirmed this but I do like thay way it sounds over the stock system.
It was a fairly easy procedure to remove and replace the center muffler. Although I did need a hand to wrestle the bypass in.
It's a very high quality product. Many more will attest to their liking of it. With that said, you will get varying opinions on how loud is loud enough. Some have added other exhaust systems in combination with the bypass and like it. Search the forum. There are many, many, did I say many, discussions on muffler bypass systems.

Thank you Rocco, Freed Performance said that the exhaust sound would be similar to the Sport Chrono package with the PSE switch turned on. I'll search on the forums.

Below is a comparison of Sharkwerks and Fabspeed cross-over pipes compliments of Riley:

X pipe on 997.2:
Sharkwerks has a deeper sound, like the car is almost a v8 or so.... by itself the sound is very tame, but adding the gundo hack makes it sound like a muscle car... very sexy but not drone/loud.
Fabspeed has a more tuner sound, (think ferrari), not as deep, more lively sound.. by itself it's again not very noticeable, but with the gundo hack you can hear it well..

I recently installed the Sharwerks bypass on my 997.2. It is still quiet enough for the neighborhood, but sounds much better when you put your foot down. I also found that the car feels more responsive that it did before. Sharkwerks also has great customer service and support.

I have the bypass on my GT3, sound is amazing, but no HP gain, in fact it lost torque.. But it's worth it IMO
A little compromise in HP/TQ, for that sound.. I have GMG version, but i imagine they all are close.

Don't mean to hijack your thread Jeffrec but I have a Q for Zucc. I have the Sharkweks bypass waiting to be installed on my '10 Pdk S cab. Quiet enough for the neighborhood is what I hope for! Did u consider doing the Ecu tune from Alan Ross (aka Sharky)? They claim 20-24 HP w 93 octane w the two mods. That's GT3 levels or almost 996 TT and M3 too!

Jeffrec, I did a couple of months ago the Sharkwerks bypass in combination with Gundo hack of the side cans on my 2011 997.2 Targa 4S - couldn't be happier with the result. Only cold start is pretty loud, loud means loud enough to set off the alarm of some of the vehicles in our parking lot

The bypass is one of the easier and cheaper mods. I had the sharkwerks in my 09 c2s.
good, raspy noises above 3000 and a slight weight savings.
I didnt know any performance difference.
I was available to uninstall it and sell it prior to selling the car.

I didn't consider the tune, I was just looking for better sound. The stock system was way too quiet. The Sharkwerks bypass definitley sounds better, but I would not consider it loud at all.

The SharkWerks center delete was my second mod on the car, clear side markers was the first. I installed myself and I have to say the quality is superb and the fit was spot on, took about and hour with no lift or jacks, the old center slid off and the new one slid on like butter. The customer service is great.
The exhaust note is much improved, though I would like a bit more sound, I am planning either the Gundo or Tubi as my next mod.... sound is a very personal choice, my son says more (bay area engineer, my wife thinks I am nuts, but smiles ear to ear when in the car driving...)
This is a must do mod, never question never look back and enjoy.
