Default It's not an urban legend after all...

So, I'd heard guys talk about this before, and I always thought it was kind of an urban legend, always thinking to myself, "There's no way..." But nope, yesterday it happened to me.

I was coming out from Aaron Bros with some frames, and had popped the frunk and was loading it up. A nice gentleman pulled up next to me and asked if I needed help. I thought originally that maybe he was referring to the fact that I was parked in a handicap spot (I'm a disabled combat vet, after multiple ankle reconstructions, breaks, knee issues, etc. but people tend to assume that I'm using someone else's placard since I'm younger and fitter looking than they're used to seeing in a handicapped spot), so I asked him, "What do you mean?"

With a perfectly straight face, and being completely earnest, he looked me in the eye and said, "Well, I saw you had your hood open and were messing with the engine, so I thought maybe you needed some help." The look on his face as I answered, "No, I'm good, thanks. I was just loading up my bags," and proceeded to drop the bags into the frunk was priceless. LOL

I have not had that happen but it seems that half the time I pull up to a bag drop at a golf course, the guy always walks to the back of the car waiting for me to 'pop the trunk'.

You have to remember that 'car guys' are just not around anymore. They're dealing with other junk and could care less about cars--and knowing about cars.

Happened to me once at the paint store.

Putting a couple gallons of paint in the frunk when a guy walking past stops dead and asks, "Are you really putting paint in with the engine?"

"The engine's in the back on these", I chuckled.

So someone offering to help with an apparent "problem under the hood" is not a car guy? I guess LexVan was right.

Did he really think he could help since he doesnt even know what kind of car or where the engine is? Maybe he thought you couldnt afford a cell phone to call AAA. I am sure he was being nice but naive.

My daughter likes to put her soccer bag in the frunk on purpose so the boys will ask or comment. They think she has the coolest car in the lot

My friend with a boxster told me a story of when he and his wife got some very strange looks when they placed a whole shopping cart of bags into the front and rear trunk...lol They even had a gentleman ask them why they were placing bags in the engine capartment....lol

Something similar happened to me shortly after I bought my Boxster. I was at home in the driveway and opened the front trunk and put my jacket in it. The woman standing next door, who I noticed out of the corner of my eye had been watching me, then came over and asked me why I was covering the engine with my jacket.

When I would take my mom grocery shopping and had to have help with groceries -- I had to escort my mom cause she was unsteady when walking and she refused to use a wheelchair -- the helper would (naturally) walk to the rear of the car. I'd have to direct him (or her) to the front. One carryout helper (a woman) at Lucky's though knew... I got to talking to her and her dad owned Vipers and she was pretty savvy about cars, including Porsches.

Happens to me all the time. The lady at my dry cleaner's laughs about it every time I go there.
