Default Melted Bumper? 997.1 C2S

Hi Guys,

After spraying some quick detail to remove dust/ exhaust soot from the back of the car, I noticed that part of the bumper appears to be burned and shows damage to the clear coat. Any ideas what could have caused this? The exhaust is stock (except for Gundo hack) and has no leaks. The strange part about this is that the part of the bumper that has the damage is quite far from the muffler.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

My guesses are:

1. prior damage +/- paint
2. Over zealous polishing/buffing

I am the third owner, but to my knowledge/ carfax the car has never been in accident or repainted. The damage was not present when I washed the car 2 weeks ago, and I have not polished/ buffed it since I bought the car 3 months ago.

looks like accident damage to me. Maybe you didn't notice it before? Anyone else drive the car?

Did you try to buff it out?

Heat from the exhaust wouldn't reach the bumper extension part next to the license plate. Haven't seen an issue like this on rennlist before, hence I also would suspect a prior sub-par paint job. Carfax will not always show these things, especially if a former owner didn't use insurance to cover the damage.

Had the rear bumper on my -06 repaired and re-painted after a light hit. Cost about $500 so no reason to drag insurance into the mix. Just a wild guess but there could be other front and rear bumper repairs out there with no carfax history for the same reason.

i agree that it looks more like accident/over detailing vs. heat damage. altho...arent the cats behind there? maybe a "seam" leak along the length of the left cat/pipe or something? just spitballing here...

May want to check for your heat shields.
this pic is of a 997.2, but there are a number of the foil panels back there.
Perhaps you're missing one on that side.

Carfax will not show accident repairs that are not reported to your insurance as others have mentioned therefore this to me looks like a bad repair job.

I work with a guy who bought a brand new 2014 Lexus ISF sport. While waiting for his car to arrive from Japan the dealer settled the deal but let him keep his trade in. The weekend before his car arrived someone back into his trade in. He got a shop to fix it and then went and picked up his new car a few days later. The dealership was none the wiser that his trade in was recently in an accident and I'm sure the guy they sold it too had no clue either.

Just food for thought how these things happen and avoid carfax reporting.

My first 911 had been hail damaged, repaired, new deck lid, new front bumper cover, and had a rear quarter panel repaired and painted under warranty. CLEAN CARFAX. I would never put any stock in CARFAX. Ever!

I think we would be very dismayed how many vehicles are damaged prior to sale during shipping or while waiting in inventory from storms and accidents that dealers get prettied up and sell as new while the buyers never have a clue.

I bought an F-250 brand new and noticed one of the doors is a tiny bit off alignment and the paint in the door jam is a bit rougher than it should be. Personally I didn't much care and figured it was within quality control standards for a heavy duty work truck. Looked in to trading it in at one point and the person assessing the vehicle noticed these issues as well and said vehicles are damaged all the time prior to their initial sale at a dealership and the dealers just get them repaired and sell them without ever telling the customer.
