Winter tire dilemma - 2011 4S

Not just to add another variable, but I was able to pick up Nokian WR G2s and a set of wheels from my dealer as a used set and have been quite happy with them. They maybe had 300 miles on them but I was able to get them for the price of a basic tire/wheel set from Tire Rack and I think it's nice to have an OE wheel.
I don't see alot of people carrying them, but they were great through the winter and in "normal" cold seemed to perform quite well.

Well -while the snow is not here yet (97 degrees today), the search for the winter tires has begun. I have used the Michelin Pilot Alpins in the past when I had a Boxster and have been quite happy with them. Tire Rack now has a more cost effective option with the Pirellis and I have a dilemma - which way to go?
Going with 235/40/18 and 265/40/18

I agree with Jumper & Damon above. Jumper is correct that a narrower tire will be better in deep snow, but I also agree with Damon that putting a 265 on an 11" wheel causes too much stretch...
BTW - the measurements you are quoting for tire sizes fit the C2S - not the C4S' wider stance.
My personal winter set-up on my C2S Cab is 255s rather than 265s (rear) and 225s rather than 235s (front). I chose this to get a narrower shoe for deep snow, and was also able to put Blizzaks on the car which have a better tread-pattern for my needs (350+ inched per winter).
My Cab IS my winter SUV - and it is damn fun to drive... I'd argue it has made me a better driver on the track with my GT3....
And both tire options that you have outlined above will be great for ice & a couple inches of snow. The grip will be fantastic.

My winter set up on my 997.1 C4 is:
Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II
rear - 295/30/19 on a 19x11 wheel
front - 235/35R19 on a 19x 8.5 wheel

I use what Porsche recommends, Pirelli Sottozero 235 35 19 & 295 30 19 mounted on BBS CH-R rims.
Everyone has an opinion, but my default is to go with the manufacturers specs.

My mistake - that is correct (apologies). The C4S has different wheel widths & offsets. It looks like for the 18s - the C2S and C4S require the same tire sizes...

I too believe that winter driving has made me a better driver; I'm greatly looking forward to the opportunity to drive a '10 C4S this winter (and beyond I hope ;-p)
I'm planning a few pilgrimages to the eastern sierra after the snow flies; if anyone regularly plays out there (on skis, shoes, ATV, etc.) it may be nice to have a bit of a caravan...US 395 (and points east) is always great fun in these cars.

Last year we ran our new-to-us 2008 C4S Cab with Pirelli 19" snow tires we got with it. The car was dangerous! I got horribly stuck in 6" of fresh snow. I am a Has-been ski instructor, and have driven in snow of all depths. 35 years instructing, in Canada. Car did not accelerate, brake, or steer well.
The tires look like new. They are 19" P's mounted on factory rims that came with the car.
Our previous 911 coupe an '05 liked its Michelin snows.
Why so bad? I am reluctant to buy new P's...

I know I have shared this before but I throw it out again.....yes 265s are what Pcar lists for the rear. I've been driving Pcars in WI winters for 20 yrs (and enjoying it
but haven't used Porsche's 'wides' for 15 of those yrs. Just my opin.
Also.....and again just my experience, if you ever mess w/tire sizes on 997 C4 or Turbo, keep in mind the tire sizes Porsche lists (front-rear) will generally reflect a 3-3.5% rolling diameter dif. (rear 3.5% greater). The car likes this.....it does not like front and rear the same.
Winter driving is a hoot........best winter practice for summer autocross.
Bets of all, Pcars can leave everybody behind.....wondering what the f##.

So, I'd say Pirelli might be a bit better in snow just from looking at the design, but I really have no concrete proof.
