DIY Starter/Battery Cable Replacement
#16
I simplified this a bit on my previous 996 cars. Works well on 997 as well

Have not done it yet on my new 997 05

I'm glad you were able to "DIY" while saving yourself money. But you also didn't replace the starter, which caused your initial problem and is considerably more expensive parts wise.
Depending on the dealer in questions labor rate, the quote he was given isn't far off. And no matter what, the technician wouldn't get rich from the 20% or less of the hourly labor rate for this job. Blame the system, not the guys earning a halfway decent living fixing your Porsche (properly).

Hello,
Review the starter and ignition switch. Evacuate and supplant starter on the off chance that it has fizzled. Test for force going to starter. Review the starter hand-off, grounds, supply links and battery.
Much of the time, battery links can't be repaired and must be supplanted as a get together. Be that as it may, now and again, your workman may have the capacity to cut the eroded piece of the link and introduce a terminal end. By doing this you can abstain from supplanting the link gathering.

I'm having this problem with my 997. I thought it was my battery dying but a local told me otherwise. If I turn my car off and try to start it again after some use it will sound like my battery is drained and barely start. This is really bad for like when I stop to pump gas after a good drive. Not to forget it's embarrassing having the car start on a struggle. I was told the cable is undersized and wears out with time. Once it gets hot, after good use,it acts up more so. I've stalled my car on a uphill and had to wait like 15 mins before attempting to start it.Good thing I reverse coasted into a parking spot! I was quoted $500 to replace the cable. Will definetly be switching it out soon.

There are many thread about the problem. "Slow crank / start when hot". Some point to bad cable and some point to bad starter, or both.
For my case, 2006 C2S, I replaced just the starter a couple of months ago and the problem wend away since.

Is this the correct part? http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU997HARNESS.html
Tiptronic version is a bit longer. I have the
number but not now in my office.

Times are made and adjusted by Porsche.
Price of the parts don't matter either.
Labor rate covers much more than the % that the tech gets. Which is much smaller than you think.
-Former Master tech that left because it's not worth it anymore.

Got it from local dealer for $139 with tax. Didn't wanna wait for suncoast to ship me one so I don't mind the small price difference. Will be getting it on tomorrow or next day. So tired of this problem.

But the car starts fine when cold I understand?
If the car starts fine when the engine is cold, the battery must be fine.
If the earth connection is bad you would also note that when cold starting.
Starter motor might be the case although when starting fine when cold I tend to believe this is not the issue.
It is quite a job to get to the starter, if your AOS has not been changed, get it done at the same time as this is a low cost item but I read they charge 1400 USD to replace this. Item cost 180 USD maximum.
Did your mechanic measure the voltage drop on the alternator?
