I do long trips routinely. Just did a quick 4 day trip from Santa Barbara to Eugene, Oregon and back (about 850 miles each way). Gets great mileage, sneaks through traffic when necessary and very comfortable (with A.S.S. seats). I have used 911 Porsches for cross-country runs for literally decades. Even in Europe, I logged a bunch of miles in no time. (I put over 3200 miles on this one during my 3-4 week European Delivery in 2006). I think my best was 10,000 miles in 30 days back in the 1980s. These things were meant to be driven. I used to make runs between my homes in Santa Barbara and Oklahoma City all the time to the point that I knew I40 by heart.

Ha! Your eyes will be opened wide if you ever get a chance to drive a 928 on the open road.

These cars are meant to be driven! The more you drive them the better they run.

Here is a video of a guy that bought a 1977 911s for $9200 and then drove it 2700 miles in 4 days to Amelia Island. (I know its not a 997 but if you can do it in a old 911 you can do it in a new 997)

The only thing you will need is a camera to take photo's of the trip.

When I got my C2S, I flew out to Baltimore with my two boys, 10 & 8 at the time, and we road tripped it back to Austin via Skyline Drive and parts of the Blueridge Pkwy, back through Memphis, TN and so on. The freeways in Arkansas were absolute hell but we stopped whenever and wherever we felt like it, had tons of fun and they both were still small enough to fit in the back seat without complaints.

I'd take a spare tire and/or know all the places along your planned route to get a tire replaced. Of course if you are doing a long trip like that and don't care where you may end up staying for a day of so for a tire repair, no worries. Reason I say this is it can be a drag to have a tire go out. Also a tire plug kit would be good.

Two weeks after buying my car I did a 4,100 mile cross-country trip (Austin to El Paso to Phoenix to LA to Sacramento to Monterey to Santa Barbara then back to Phoenix, El Paso, and back to Austin). FANTASTIC road trip car. LOVED every minute of it. Get a good radar detector.

Brettf1200, welcome to Rennlist! Always nice to see more Austin folks!

CAA or AAA plus is your friend. No warrantee, cover your odds. The $1oo membership, is cheap compared to a $3oo tow. But insist on a flat bed.
I have tire repair tools, air compressor, gloves, mat, a couple quarts of oil, Coolant, packet in the frunk. If its there, and you organised, you'll never need it.

Agreed.

I do a regular Florida to DC run and it's very comfortable as well as being very fun. It's the perfect balance because you never really get bored like you would in a regular car but you're not complaining about the exhaust or ride 5 hours into it either. The car actually is very comfortable to sleep in believe it or not - the seats recline nearly flat and you can save time and money from a hotel with a quick nap here and there if you've got a long run. I plan on doing a Florida to California run sometime next year in this car, wouldn't pick any other.

We just finished an 1800 mile pacific coast trip to the America's cup finals. The 997 was the perfect tool for the job. The roads from fort Ross to San francisco are fantastic.
