Default Is air cooling dead..forever?

There is something unique, charismatic, and Porsche brand specific about air cooling. Some BMW motorcycles still offering air cooling.....

Is This engineering technology gone forever?

VW was also air cooled back in the day, so not Porsche brand specific. Gone forever, which is a good thing.

Maybe so. Here is an interesting piece on air cooled engines that concludes with the following:

"Air-cooled engines traditionally ran slightly rich to reduce combustion temperatures. Unfortunately, this both reduces fuel efficiency and increases hydrocarbon emissions. In addition, the cooling system of most modern cars has to cope not only with engine heat, but the heat generated by air-conditioning condensers, forced induction intercoolers and transmission fluid coolers. These additional loads tip the balance well in favour of a liquid cooling system. Finally, it is quite difficult to design a multi-valve cylinder head for an air-cooled engine as space quickly runs out for adequate fin sizing and airflow."

Maybe air cooled diesels for cars in the future?

As long as the EPA is around, Porsche would have difficulties meeting US requirements with air cooling.

You can still get yourself an air cooled lawnmower.

making 400bhp out of a naturally aspirated air cooled flat 6 motor that will last 150k miles, meet emissions standards, have a hope of fuel economy, and not beat up oil terribly is not gonna happen.

I'd say all this is very do-able (a 993 Turbo), expect the fuel economy (anything much above 20-22 MGP's).

92 HP from 1000ccs air cooled manufactured in 2009 passing EPA with flying colors.

So, I'd say ~330 HP(maybe even 400) from 3.6 liters is totally achievable.

Is it a good idea?- not really. It's not the most effecient way to get power per liter of fuel.
