Buying advice
I have had a 2001 Carrera in the past, sold it a while ago. Am now looking at a MY 2009-2010 car.
1. Plan to do a PPI. Want to ask what's a DME report and what info does it contain. Is it a part of the PPI ?.
2. I am also debating between a Targa and a standard coupe. Does the Targa have any disadvantages, or problems (eg roof rattle ?).
Thanks for your answers..

I have a 996 targa ... Roofs seem reliable but expensive to fix if something breaks. Glass roof is heavier .. So might impact lap times at the track a fraction .. But you don't notice in normal/aggressive driving. On very very rough road you can get a few rattles but structure generally stiff .. Advantage of big glass and hatch is huge for everyday use / touring IMHO

Sorry to sound negative but if you find a car have an independent PPI including paint thickness if cosmetics are important. The CPO stuff is absolutely worthless, a dealer can send absolute crap out with a CPO as I've just found. It's just marketing fluff.

Thank you guys. I am getting a PDK, but is the sport chrono plus useful ?. I drive "enthusiastically", but will likely not track the car. I read somewhere, that SC+ is only useful when red lining on the track ?.

+1 on PPI over CPO...maybe once-upon-a-time CPO meant something, but lately I've heard some horror stories with regard to what can pass for a CPO vehicle.
And you definitely want SC+ if you're going to go the PDK route, it makes the throttle/gearing more sporty and aggressive (in "normal" mode without it, the throttle is too laggy and the auto shifts happen too early IMO).

i was told by one place that a ppi is the same check list as they do for a cpo car, not sure if its bs or not, i went somewhere else though, didnt sound like he was going to actually look for problems but rather just go through the motions

^ Actually, the CPO checklist is very comprehensive. The problem is getting the dealer to actually DO the inspection rather than just checking off the blocks. (Pencil whipping)
Since the PPI establishement is getting paid to do it, perhaps there's more incentive there rather than the Porsche dealer simply whipping it.
We do pay a premium for a CPO car, but like someone said earlier, its related to warranty and not condition.

Look for an independent shop to perform the PPI. For both 911s that I've purchased, the $200 PPI was worth every cent and then some.

I truly think your experience has been awful, but I've owned 3 cpo'd Porsches and have never had a problem. In my personal opinion I wouldn't buy used without it.

I agree for the warranty, but my mistaked was assuming CPO = great condition. I think you have to verify that yourself (which I'm sure you did). I'm glad yours have been good
