Yes - and I need to buy one b/c my '79 SC is the most "raw" 911 I have ever driven... And I have yet to drive a 911 prior to that model year, so I can only imagine how naive I truly am...

I like "throwback" 911s. The 93/94 RSA was such a car - far different from the softer "base" 964. The 996 GT3 was another throwback 911 - and the difference between it and a regular 996 was astounding. I am hoping that the 991 GT3 will maintain the raw 911 lineage, but the move to PDK & 4-wheel steering sounds discouraging.

I have test-driven the 991S and Boxster S back to back - and for me, the Boxster was the better street car. This is the first time I have ever chosen a Boxster over a 911. Times are changing.

the 991 is a great car, but too much sound deadening.. and modern refinements... needs to be an S to sound good otherwise it pur's like a kitten.. they have made some great leaps (chassis is insane, too good to be honest... seating is better, back seats better, placement of this and that and technological avancements... all well and good.

the engine needs more power, and more grunt.. it's too ferrari with it's top end power instead of being fun all the way thru the rev's... nothing is more boring than a 991 from 2-5k rpm... not even my smart car is that bland and without soul.. you have to floor it and get into the rpm's to have any fun.

but highway driving.. whew... it surely IS a touring car.
I think this is pretty much the perfect synopsis. If PAG built cars the way purists/enthusiasts might want them they'd go out of business rather quickly (and, in fact, didn't this almost happen many years ago).

I haven't driven the 991 yet, but there's nothing about it that, as an existing Porsche owner, makes me feel the need to rush out and out and drive one. So it seems to me that Porsche has failed in the redesign.

he resign.

yep, another reason why prices of air-cooled Porsches are rising; they don't make them drive like they used too.

Also, I don't care too much about the center console, looks too similar to the Panamera....too sophisticated for my taste.

I really like my 997.2 but would get a 991 in a heartbeat.

Now that the new Cayman S is larger, it finally has enough leg room for me to drive it comfortably. That may be another option for me in the future.

I drove a 991 S-cab for about four or five miles a couple weeks ago. One of my clients drove my '09 and got the bug. Went in looking for a CPO 997 and walked out with the 991.

I can't really comment on the driving dynamics as I drove it only a very short distance. The controls seem to be just as oddly laid out as on my car and the interior didn't feel particularly roomy. We're talking about very marginal increases across the board.

I liked the console although the new Panamera-style center console would make it more difficult to reach up my wife's dress.

The styling is neater, especially in the rear where the slit taillights look really good and the vents are more aggressive.

I agree with Sela and Gota911. It's not a drastic enough change that I'll have to run right out and buy one but I'd still like to have one just the same.

Cars always get better with newer model years, they also happen to get longer, wider and shorter in most cases. Power, MPG and number of transmission gears go up but emissions go down. In summary they just get better.

Our cars are no exceptions.

Yes - just like our GMO 'franken-food' that looks good but lacks taste and texture. Not sure if I really like that. And yes - we do all get used to it with each generation. Maybe I'm just getting old and need some excitement in my life.

+1

And that was exactly why I bought the GT3. That's not for everyone, but I like raw.

From the article: “a car everybody wants and nobody needs”. My wife fully agrees with this statement.

AMEN!

When I was shopping for my first 911 last year, I was torn between the 993 and 997.1. The air cooled car was more raw but I intend to drive a lot (9500 miles last summer) and felt that was better done in a water cooled car. The air cooled purists say the water cooled cars are too posh and too tame. I agree, but found my compromise. 2008 C2S Cabrio 6spd w/PASM&PSE.

The 991 is a GT car. Bigger, plusher, smoother. All things I think a sports car isn't. I unplugged PSE so its on all the time and did the helmholtz mod to get a nice intake rasp. I like to drive with PASM set to 'harsh' so I feel everything the road has to give.
ADVENTURE indeed Zeus!
