Default 2009 C2S - Add oil or do service?

Purchased a 2009 C2S with 20k miles 11 months ago. At that point the car was CPO'd by the dealer. It now has 24,000 miles.

I got a notice on the car that it is due for a service in 29 days. I decided to check the oil level this morning and it was on the lower end of the bracket.

Given that, should I just add some oil or take it in for its service now which would include an oil change?

Also, what should I expect the service to be when I take it in? 3 year & 24,000 miles?

Thanks,

Jason

Oil + Filter = $150 DIY or ~$300 @ Dealer
New engine = $35,000
There are people on this forum who change oil every 6 mos. or 5K Miles (myself incl.). Some even more often.
Your call

Beautiful car, BTW!

Cheers,
=L=

If you drive the car, it might blow up.....If youre really worried about it, add a little oil. In my opinion, if youre at the bottom of min, youre fine. Oil level is forgiving, it doesnt have to be perfect. Long term yeah, you should have the proper level but for a couple of days youre fine.

Or spend $5 on a quart of oil, and drive it some till you can take it in for service.

I would get a quart and add a little just so you can sleep easy at night, stuff like this sits in the back of my mind if I don't. Enjoy your weekend.

I can't imagine not checking the oil on my 997.2 once per year--the penalty is just too great. Get some oil into that car before you drive around over the weekend and, once serviced, check it on some periodic interval until you have some benchmark on what the oil useage actually is running

Hi Jason,
If that beautiful car were mine, I would add oil immediately.
Good oil, of course.

+1 add oil... I also keep one of these in my frunk with a liter of oil JIC. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product//PKM1OB.html FYI, 1 bar on the oil e-gauge = 0.4 liters of oil. FWIW, the Porsche recommended schedule is the minimum period recommended between oil changes. Some of us don't buy what Porsche recommends as gospel and change our oil more frequently... certainly doesn't hurt to do so especially if you DIY. At times Porsche's recommended scheduled maintenance intervals appear to be self motivated for reasons other than prolonged engine life. I recall, for example, that Porsche recommended an oil change interval of 20K miles for the '07 997.1... makes you wonder if they were attempting to meet some type of CAFE standards/requirement. I for one would not consider the purchase of a Carrera with a 20K miles oil change interval performed over it's life.

Not much use repeating what everyone else has already said, but I did want to say that you've got a beautiful car. Love seeing the top down!

Thanks everybody for the input. I have a service scheduled for first thing on Tuesday. I'll also make sure to do a better job checking the oil on a more regular basis.

Although it had a service a year ago it was in the shop about 5 months ago for a clutch switch repair and at that time they also checked the fluid levels.

Just do I know...what is the Porsche official recommended oil for my car? I'd like to get some for reserve.

don't let the crazies here worry you. Its fine to drive it as is. I wouldn't go and do a track day but driving around town is a non issue.

Good idea by USMC DS1 on keeping a quart in the frunk. Maybe a serpentine belt too.

Seems like the OP needs to monitor his oil level more often.

Ok...new info on this to help me decide what to do.

- The car had it's 2 year 20k service in June 2011
- It got an oil change as part of the CPO in June 2012
- It's do for it's year service but technically ready for the 4 year large service in Dec. 2013.

So do I:

1) Just add oil now and do the big service in Dec '13
2) Do an oil change now and then do the service in Dec '13 which will include another oil change
3) Do the 4 year service now, 6 months early

Feeling like #2 is the way to go but I'd love your thoughts.

+1 on the beautiful car. Love cabs myself. IMHO If you got a full oil change in June 2012, then just add some oil (Porsche approved of course) and wait until Dec for the big service. I would assume the oil change at CPO June 2012 used something like Mobil 1 0w-40 if done by the dealer, so grab a quart and add some until you get the level up near the top, but don't overfill.
