Thank you for the great write up James. Very helpful as usual.
Can anyone confirm if the procedure is the same for a 2007 997.1 GT3? I've got 4 Jackpoint jack stands and getting into 1st gear seems a little notchy when cold (only at 20K miles but 8 years old) so I'm hoping a change to the Mobil 1 PTX will solve the problem.
Being new to working on my own cars, I'd like to know if the drain and fill plugs would look the same on the GT3. Wouldn't want to drain and fill the wrong holes:banged:

I'd check in the GT3 specific section regarding your gearbox. We 'normal' 997 folk have Aisin 'boxes while you have a Getrag. Completely different units although I'd fathom that the process should be all but identical. Fill/drain holes could well be in different locations though.

Lawrence, try ALLDATADiy.com. They have the basic tech pubs on the GT3. BTW, they don't have a search engine but these are the sub-folders/where I found the procedure for the 997.1. Maybe similar sub-folders within the GT3 pub. GL!

Thanks James for the info and also for the Durametric recommendation. I ordered the Enthusiast first but may upgrade for the coding capability if I think I need it in the future.

997.2 gear oil change is the same as the 997.1. Remove the rear under-panel. I think the two plugs are 24mm. Take the "fill" plug out first. (It's not good to drain the 75W90 and then not be able to remove the "fill" plug for obvious reasons.) Torque to about 25ft/lbs. Holds about 3 liters. Use the Mobilube PTX from Suncoast for the best shifting result. You can get a hand-pump at most auto parts stores.

Just did mine yesterday. I did not have the transfer pump and this may have made things easier. Make sure you dive the car several miles to warm the fluid for easier draining.
I ordered 3 liters of Mobilube from Suncoast
Tools used were as described (t25, 10mm and 24mm)
The Renntech forum discusses a 16mm triple square and 17mm hex; however when I got under the car, this was not the case.
I have a scissor lift, so that kept the car level. I had to use an additional block to get better access to 2 t25 fasteners.
I did find some metal in the old fluid. I believe this is to be expected since the fluid had never been changed. Might be hard to see in the picture.
Not a difficult job to accomplish. I did notice a difference in shifting with the new fluid.

I also did this one today, a couple of notes:
1 I only had to remove the rear most cover beneath the transmission, that gave me enough access.
2 I highly recommend removing the rear passenger wheel and coming at the car from the side. This will help you avoid having your entire torso under the engine, which makes me nervous as another poster also said
3 You can use the transfer pump to accelerate the draining process. Once you remove the fill bolt and the drain bolt, you can pump air into the transmission from the filler hole and this pushes out the remaining oil much faster as you essentially pressurize the transmission
4 It is very convenient to change the engine oil at the same time, adds maybe 30 minutes to the total time
I'm off for a test drive to see how different it feels!
