Default Pdk in 991 so much better than the 997?

Been reading good reviews about the pdk in the 991. Some say a lot better than the pdks in our 997's. are they really that different considering that the item is practically a carry over from 997 to 991?

I drove a 991S for about 10min and really couldn't tell the difference. How're ever this was on suburban streets and didn't really get to check it out much. But I hear the 991 version is better but not sure where its better

I rode in our dear friend the late Gary Sims 991 and I didnt notice any difference at all. Infact it had some of the same little imperceptible hickups that ours have. He really wrung it out on our test drive and I drove it a short distance and there was not much I could tell, but mine just had the software update at the dealer and its better than it was before the update.

Yeah dealer stated before I departed with the loaner how much better it is and I will enjoy more then my current. Not much really but whats gets me is why they want to make this statement and almost put down the original.

Speaking of Gary - I'm sure we all miss him. Super great guy. Anybody know what came of his car?

OldGuy - can you tell me more about the software update? I was unaware of it. What does it do and is it required? I have PDK w/ sport chrono.

You're surprised? They're trying to move 991s, not the greatest reception so far, so they must advertise the supposed gains/benefits.

The most is a software upgrade, which if they were honest, could be offered to 997 owners! Kinda like iPhone 4S and Siri, they could enable that for iPhone 4 with a SW update, but they didn't, so you got buy the exact same phone to get Siri!

Several months ago I did some un-scientific testing on the street and later the track with 991 and 997.2. The only difference I noticed is in auto mode and using the paddles to shift. In the 991 the driver induced downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st are faster (crisper?) than the same shifts in a 997.2 - the 997.2 exhibited a slight lag. I did not notice this effect on driver induced upshifts while in auto mode. This was done on the street and in not in sport or sport+.

In full auto mode (no paddles or stick used, just let the PDK shift for you) with sport+ and sport on the track I could not "feel or hear" any difference is speed of shifts; I thought the 991 auto downshifted slightly sooner than the 997.2 but I attributed that to the different engine maps between 991 and 997.2. This is a very qualitative observation on my part, no real data only sight and sound.

In manual mode, sport+ and sport on the track, under full driver control, no difference in speed of shifts from gear to gear. But in this case I was using the stick in psuedo sequential mode (no paddles or buttons). The upshifts and downshifts engaged immediately except for one time when the downshift on the 997.2 would have rev'ed over redline (driver error).

My conclusion to my non-scientific test generally agree with comments posted by others with the one exception being driver induced lower gear downshifts in auto mode - shift speed goes to the 991.

Thanks for feedback, all of those perceived differences are again could be attributed to the software, and not necessarily the actual transmission.

Who upgraded their PDK software? How did they do that and what was the difference?

PS. Looks like 991 GT3 got the biggest SW upgrade, would be interesting if folks could get that mapping?

The 991 PDK has hardware and software updates according the tech that works on my car. He indicated that you couldn't patch the 991 software to the 997.2.

CAA I hadnt had mine in the shop since I got it new in 09. I did the oil changes myself. So finally after my X5M went in to the shop I thought I should go get the upgrade. THe only thing I KNOW of is the hard downshift in sport mode with sport chrono was much better. That was the only hiccup I know of but if you search the forum you probably find more info. Its free and under warranty.

its diff, the power output is different as well.. i had base 997.2 and base 991. the 991 has no power down low it's all up top.. so the shifting feels diff. sport chrono on 991 kicks harder however..

the software is surely diff, the start off feels diff (think: feathering clutch), also regular mode feathers the clutch each shift.

case and point:

997.2 pdk with update fels better regular and sport mode

991 pdk feels better in sport plus mode.

the 991 just seems like it's trying to soccer mom each shift, especially starting at a light..

what update is this that some are talking about. Is it an update from 09 to 10 and above? or is it for all 997.2 pdk's. i read before there was an update from the 09 pdk software to the latest. does this mean that if we have a 10 and later model there is no update?

Quick Reply: Pdk in 991 so much better than the 997?
