And the car's drop off in value reflects this.

Even in some times new Cabs lose considerable value. Back in early 2009 I was being offered brand new Cabs for $30K under sticker.
While I agree cabs are a smaller mkt, your discount was likely more closely related to the credit crisis and flagging sales.

I purchased my 997.2 20% under sticker at that time

I have had cabs since my early 20's (that is 20yrs). So I am bias and really dont think about the depreciation vs non cabs. I just want what I like and drive it like I stole it.

The top doesn't creak when it's down! If the weather is so bad I can't have the top down I drive something else.

+1... I started 30 yrs ago with a coupe then two cabs(BMW's) and now I'm back in a coupe(C2S). I've noticed that when I'm in the coupe... I want to roll the top down in a cab. When I'm in a cab everything is great until I put the top up and then I want to be back in the confines and quite comforts of a coupe. Maybe a Targa would be a good compromise next time... but then I've read that they creak as well. Could someone confirm whether or not this is the case with the Targa's. Life truly is good when we have these types of choices to contemplate. Have a great weekend to all.

Agreed

The other odd thing is the C4S has a big premium, but loses that just as fast as Cabs when it comes to resale. Who buys these cars for resale anyway? Not I, but it is interesting.

Well some other reasons for the rapid depreciations are
1. The second and third ... owners are worried about maintenance. So the cab top is more to worry about. Is the top solid. Does the mechanics all work properly etc etc.
2. The used 911 crowd are more hard core, and may take the car to the track so the issue of no top
comes to the forefront in getting a roll bar type of thing to protect incase of roll over.

Those are just some of the reasons. I think the first cab owner is more of a guy who has just made it in the world and it wants a car that shows that and what other car does that better than the 911 Cab?

Overall I think its more the extra maintenance that is involved.

My experience with convertibles, spyders, drop-head coupes, cabriolets, etc. is best seen at world class level concours events where the more cherished and valuable vehicles are the convertibles. I'm talking, however, of much older cars than the 997. Imagine the value/price to be an inverted bell curve. Initially, they are $10,000 more than their coupe equivalent, but when it gets very old (and is maintained) its value goes back up again.

Someday, when the 997 gets old--e.g., 20-25 years from now, the well maintained cabs will be worth more than the equivalent aged coupe.

Started chatting with a guy while filling up. He's in a 997.1 GT3. I'm in my 997.1 C2S Cab.
He says "I had a cabrio before but thought I wanted more power and cornering so bought this. I regret it every day. If you switch for a coupe you'll regret it".

Depreciation is not part of the equation- its all about the passion!

coke or pepsi? McD or BK? just personal preference. Cab depreciate more is probably more due to higher initial cost than anything else. Cabs cost about $10k more than similarly equipped coupe. A S class will depreciate more than a E class...just purely math. That's just my take. I love my Cab.

My seven year old and my 4 year old are very comfortable in the back of the cab. Really surprised to hear there is any difference in seat size than in a coupe to be honest. You can't use wind deflector if the kids are in the back but that's not that big a problem anyway.

Yea have 3 smallish kids, took the deflector out of the car and we are all fine in the cab. More room in the trunk for soccer stuff.

I had a cab, then got a Targa. Loved the Targa but missed the cab. So sold the Targa and got another cab. Love it. I disagree that cabs depreciate more. Looking at used cars, coupes are typically cheaper than equivalently optioned cabs in my experience.
Try carrying big things in a coupe LOL. First photo is a set of 305.30.19 tires. Second is a front bumper crated for shipping.
Bottom line, every model is wonderful.

Yup, me too. That's how I see it too.
