My OE coil part number started with 997 (07 C2S), my buddy's started with 996 (05 C2S). We both use same replacement coils without any problems. I can probably track down one of his old coils to get the full part number if you want.

05 C2S (997) coil part number: 996 602 102 00
If you google that part number it shows as Boxter, 996, etc coil.

Coils (like other parts) are tied to the car's VIN. I've been told by Porsche dealer parts managers the correct way to ensure the right part is obtained is to have the part # looked up using a current parts catalog.
Porsche changes parts all the time. To give you an idea... For my 02 Boxster the battery part # changed: Porsche spec'd a larger high capacity battery; the wiper nozzles: Porsche went with IIRC heated nozzles and in turn these required a couple of wiring harness additions: plugs: several times.
Some part numbers for my 03 Turbo changed as well but I can't recall offhand what they were. I don't really care as I source the parts from my local dealer.
To assume that a part number that is for one model applies to all, or doesn't apply to all, is a wrong assumption and possibly a risky one, too.
For instance maybe Porsche went with a new plug part number because the maker changed the original plug and it no longer qualifies to be listed under the same part number?
Best to as I covered above verify the up to date part number for your car at the dealer's parts department. If you want to buy the part elsewhere that's up to you.
