Default 2008 911 Rear Wheel Issue

I have a 911 2008 I just bought and noticed the passenger side rear wheel is out further to than on the drivers side. Appears to be 1/4 - 1/2 inches difference. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or if knows what could be wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Is there a spacer on just one side?

If they are OEM wheels check that the offsets are the same. Offset will be stamped along with width on either side of the valve stem (e.g., 11__67 or 11__51). Possibly could have one wide body offset wheel and one narrow body offset wheel.

Are the tires the same size?
Stock configuration is C2S= 295mm, C4S=305mm

Well you've checked all the obvious - maybe frame was damaged - half inch difference seems like a lot.

Years ago Porsche 911s were not symmetrical at all. The right front tire would easily rub on the fender if you upsized the wheels a bit--requiring the practice of 'rolling your fenders...'

The newer cars, like the 997 are much improved so my guess is that something substantial happened to that car. Was it purchased used? Did you have a look at something like CARFAX? All the usual stuff that you have already checked sounds fine.

One last thing--check all suspension pieces and make sure the proper torque values are applied to each component. For something like this enlist the aid of the service guys. I have seen that on other cars but not Porsche, where some suspension components were falling apart resulting in a significant geometry difference leading to a noticeable difference from the side.

Could it be an alignment issue?

I would not be surprised to see that one of the fenders was mashed and repaired in a parking lot type fender bender. I think that's probably the most likely case. You really have to hit the car hard to bend the frame. You can take the wheels off and measure the fender distance off the wheel mounting surface with a big carpenter's L square. If that's the case, a decent body shop can set it right pretty easily.

can can check the camber adjuster (you can see on the car-side of the bottom control arm) to see if the eccentric is the in the same place right and left. But if the camber was off 1/2" at the top i think you'd be able to visibly see that the wheel was tipped out at the top.

What I'd do is take both wheels off and check the hub to fender distances. If same, no suspension problems, or otherwise...

PErhaps just a misuse of the term, or lack of familiarity with the 911--there is no frame to these cars. They are of a monocoque design and construction which means that what will have to be measured are select pick up points on the body. All 911s have prescribed points that are mapped for this measurement. If it doesn't drive right, and you suspect a problem with alignment, take it to a body shop there they can, for a fee, put the entire body on a special rack and measure all those points to see if they are within specification. Only a violent collision would whack the number(s) off.

Thanks for all the input. I took the car to Porsche today and camber was off. Car was re-alligned and check over thoroughly and not other issues were found. Also had them check for any body damage at some point and all is good. No paint or body work has been done. Porsche dealer said it was a very nice car and runs out just fine. I now can breath a sigh of relief.

Thanks for passing on your report. Now go out and drive it without any fear of suspension issues.

either wheel offset is not the same per side or sub frame is not centered or car has been wrecked and repaired. If you bought the car new and have stock wheels, no wreck, then your subframe needs adjusted.
