what did you end up doing?
to go into more detail:
997.1 all you need is the gundo hack, pops and burbles on downshift... nice growl but not too loud.
997.2 the DFI and restrictive cats and extra muffler makes the car VERY quiet stock.
Gundo hack on 997.2 add's just a little extra sound, but mostly add's a slight PSE sound... very slight..
X pipe on 997.2:
Sharkwerks has a deeper sound, like the car is almost a v8 or so.... by itself the sound is very tame, but adding the gundo hack makes it sound like a muscle car... very sexy but not drone/loud.
Fabspeed has a more tuner sound, (think ferrari), not as deep, more lively sound.. by itself it's again not very noticeable, but with the gundo hack you can hear it well..
gundo hack benefit: at start up the car growls but then gets VERY quiet once the rev's calm down and engine warm... this means DD with the hack is very simple and calm (ever heard a stock g35 pass you, sexy and calm)... when you get on the rev's the hack comes alive and the car sounds amazing...
as far as bypassing side cans with center X pipe=too loud.. i have done that with both center pipes.. it's basically "straight pipes".
end notes:
997.1 with hack=all you need
997.2 with hack=you need to bypass the center muffler/resonator as well for any sound gain..
please let us know what you end up with.. on my 997.1 and 997.2 i tried every combo of parts for the best sound and my final outcome (which stayed on the car till the day i sold it) was Fabspeed X pipe and gundo hack sides..

I ended buying the Fabspeed X-Pipe (Dave's). I have scheduled an installation for Saturday morning and look forward to hearing what the impact is.

Well... I actually did not. I need to get the gaskets as they did not want to take it apart without them in case the old ones would not be usable. No way of getting them locally as there is no dealership in Des Moines and the Omaha dealer did not even have them in stock. (the pleasures of living in the boonies...) Calling Sunsport in the morning to get to round two. The X-pipe looks great though and I am looking forward to getting it on. I will post as soon as I get this straight.

i would personally say to do the install yourself.. without even jacking the vehicle up you can do it in under 30 minutes..
fly me out and i'll do the install for you for free and bring my tools as carry on.. it's 3 ratchets... the only difficult part is that the fabspeed pipe is about 2mm too narrow so you have to push the cat 2mm to slide it on.

Mufflerectomy complete
Finally had the Fabspeed X-pipe installed today that I purchased from DallasDave some time ago. The sound change is subtle but I like it! I may continue with Fister (or Gundo) mufflers at a later date. The car feels like it "breathes freer", but I am sure that is more my imagination than reality... Here are the pre and post surgery pictures:

Considering the 997.1 muffler bypass- basically straight off the cats to the tips. Anybody here with a cabrio 997.1 who has done this? I wonder how a soft top car would mitigate droning?

Looking at the side mufflers, the factory Porsche Sport Exhaust on my car looks pretty close to the gundo hack. It's definitely louder when switched on, but isn't enough for me.
I did the hemholtz resonator block off and that added some intake growl, but still looking for more music.

I just did the Gundo hack (tip o' the hat to Mr. Gundo) on my 997.2 and I'm very happy with the result. I used a 2" pipe and the sound is deep and not too loud. After a few weeks I may decide I want a little more volume and I wonder what would happen if I went to a "double Gundo" ie two 2" bypass pipes on each muffler. Has anyone tried that, or is there some reason that just wouldn't work?

Late to the conversation. I put a Sharkwerks center muffler by pass on my '09 C2S over 4 years and 33,000 miles ago and have not regretted it one minute. In fact I think I had the first production one and helped to write the installation instructions. Bottom line it is well constructed, still looks like new and still sounds great. No cockpit drone at cruise and great "GT3" like sound.
Additionally is saves over 10 lbs of weight ( over the OEM third muffler) at a place you want to save weight. Because it is less massive it also allows more cooling airflow around the engine. Have not found a negative yet. I strongly recommend this and then later think about any mod to the side mufflers. By the way when I installed it I was in my late 60's, missing 5 discs in my spine and did the intal with the car on the ground in less than an hour.
NOTE: you will need a 1/4 in socket set with an extension and a flexible joint attachment to get at one bolt. The rest is easy AND you will like it, true PORSCHE quality.
