Default Mobridge Questions

Hey guys,
I had just took delivery of a 2006 997 C2S and the car came with a mobridge unit (manuals in the glovebox & ipod cable in armrest). I have been unable to locate the unit itself? Sounds odd, but I looked in the frunk where the cd changer would be and its empty?

Could it be in the dash somewhere as well?

Anyway, the reason I ask is that I cannot get the Bluetooth to work on it? I have the base PCM system and I believe the mobridge unit offers the BT connection being it shows up on my iphone 4s but just gives me an error when i try to connect...something along the lines of make sure the device is powered on or something.

I was hoping to locate the unit and try resetting it somehow or upgrading the firmware etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Brandon

My MoBridge unit was installed in the center console stack with a iPod cable running to the glove box.

BT requires a sync with a code. The manual (which I think is avail online) has the code required for the unit to sync to the phone. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll look in my manual when I get home in two weeks.

Thanks for the reply. When you say center console, where exactly is yours placed? Behind the headunit or closer to the glovebox? Sorry just trying to narrow it down.

I plan to dig around a bit more this evening. I will report back!

Here is what I have

Install:

Follow PCM removal :

http://www.caymanclub.net/reviews/sh...php?product=92

and/or

Step 1 - Remove small carpeted trim piece from side of center console by PCM (Beside PCM) Using Torx wrench size T-30
Step 2 - Remove two leather side trim pieces using Torx wrench size T-20
Step 3 - Using 5mm Allen wrench turn four (two each side) black hex locks 1/4 - 1/2 turn (CCW, I think) to unlatch side locks. Do not force these. They turn very easily in the correct direction. Open glove box on passenger side to access these latches.
Step 4 On pasenger side, back out 7 mm hex head screw
Step 4 - Carefully slide out PCM

A-pillar: route wire up a pillar and through headliner- use a credit card or similiar to push behind trim....there are other threads on this.....

After pulling out PCM, swap fiber optic strands CAREFULLY as per MoBridge instructions for Tyco connectors and tap into power and ground using 12 gauge taps and 22 gauge blade connectors from Radio Shack. Here is a picture showing the taps and orange fiber optic cables.

A sweet place to mount the unit with extremely easy access for SD card firmware upgrades is behind the glovebox, in a slot with just the right width, under a foam trim piece. I used industrial strength Velcro form Ace hardware to mount the light unit behind the glovebox,

The following photos show the mounting of the unit in the slot between firewall and back of glovebox:

Ready for insertion, with all wires and cables routed, I added a cable sheath as well:

View looking up from floor on passenger side- unit mounted in slot between electrical control box and plenum chamber, just behind glovebox, and held fast with extra strength Velcro - no bump will dislodge this from the velcro !:

Here is a picture of the routed Ipod cable - yes, very simple, and as easy as it looks.

Instructions:

Remove the thin black foam trim piece just under the glovebox that runs from the front bottom of the glovebox to the kick-panel/firewall - it is held on by a few black plastic screws - this allows access to the area for Mobridge install, AND to snake Ipod cable into glovebox via backside route.......It may help to shine a flashlight from the open glovebox so you know where to snake Ipod cable.

Got this in a email today from mObridge regarding their bluetooth:
"For Porsche vehicles your vehicle must contain the PCM navigation system and internal
SIM card to take advantage of the phone functionality on MOST"

I routed the Ipod cable into the glovebox : there is a thin foam trim piece just under the glovebox that runs to the kick-panel/firewall - it is held on by a few screws - remove this piece to access that area for Mobridge install and to snake cable into glovebox via backside route.......

It works as it supposed to and so far I had only one crash. It wasn't clear whether it is mObridge's fault or not since it was the iPod that locked up. The song is very good, selecting song is not as easy as from iPod thumb wheel. Basically it use the CD changer interface of the PCM for control, one disc per function. Disc 1 for select song from a playlist, disc 2 for selecting song from artist, disc 3 from an alphabetical list, disc 4 for selecting it from album, disc 5 for selecting songs from genre and finally disc 6 for using aux input or directly from iPod. In mObridge, you have a less layer than iPod when selecting song from genre or artist. For example, in iPod you have genre->album->song, in mObridge you have genre->song. If you have a lot of songs in the same genre then it is more difficult to select the song want.

You can move to the next song or go back to the prev song from the driving wheel, and selecting song from PCM interface while driving is not recommanded, I almost got myself into trouble while doing that. One thing good it the capability to unlock the iPod and select the song directly from the front wheel without the need to use an aux line so your front side passenger can select the song for you.

Not to be overly negative but I've had a mobridge installed for approx 10 months and find the user interface through the PCM to be horrible, to the point that it is very distracting when trying to navigate to a playlist, artist or album. It's okay once you get to a certain playlist and then just select "random" but otherwise it's just not intuitive.

Also to address your post, re bluetooth sync...there are two mobridge variants...one with BT and the other without. Not sure how to tell whether your unit has BT other than physically locating it which GrahamML has helped above. Your's might not have BT.

Just yesterday dropped off my 4S with a local audio specialist to address the whole issue by replacing the PCM head unit with a touchscreen Alpine 927HD which is very intuitive to use, includes nav (without the cost of Porsche disk updates), bluetooth for phone and music (not video though), CD / DVD, Pandora and Sirius. I personally cringed at the thought of replacing the OEM head unit but after seeing the after market product, i was sold for $2K. Also in the process of upgraded the amp and speakers, accoustic foam in doors as well. That part is quite a bit more $ though.

I will keep all the OEM parts just in case I switch to a 997.2 someday.

I drive a cab so usually turn the stereo off so I can hear the sweet tunes that the flat-6 cranks out but on those cold mornings and commutes it will be nice to listen to my ipod without monkeying around with the PCM just to play some bloody AC/DC.
Good luck with your bluetooth. I'll get off my soapbox now. lol
Cheers!

I appreciate the detailed info! Based on the section I quoted above, I can assume my car will not work with Bluetooth being my PCM does NOT have NAV.

The ipod portion works fine, so I will double check with mobridge to verify.

Thanks,

I agree from just messing around with it tonight, its not overly user friendly but it works and it was included
