Default How much DE day insurance to buy?

I'm looking forward to Lime Rock in about a week with my local P-club. This will be my 4th two day event over the last few years. I'm satisified to be in the Green/Novice run group. I recently reviewed my Allstate policy and found the following paragraph:

"We will not pay for any damages an insured person is legally obligated to pay because of:
c. use of an auto at a track or course designed or used for racing or high performance driving;"

I get a 10% discount on track day insurance through PCA at Locton Affinity. Here are my choices:

$25,000 worth of coverage for $159
$50,000 $307
$80,000 $489

Any advice on which choice to make would be appreciated!

lockton is easiest and mostly on par with other smaller firms i've researched. get a multi- plan, for my '06 C2S (agreed val = 51000) i pay about $240 per event over 9 events.

I've used this PCA insurance a couple times --- no claims so far but I had heard positive response from others who had claims, seems like a good outfit for the purpose. DE Insurance is like any other insurance, it is really for peace of mind so it is a personal decision as to how much you want to cover. I've sinced decided to "self insure" as I know my driving style and run group partners well. But upon my first couple DE's at a new track, I used it at about 70% replacement cost. Looking back I may have been over insured.

It is rather difficult to damage a car in a DE event, so I never buy extra insurance. It is a a controlled environment, instructor by your side and certainly safer than driving on the street.

Remember that you might also liable for damage to track facilities (walls, armco, trees, whatever) should you crash. I know that this is true at the Porsche School given at the Barber Track in Birmingham, AL

But you don't run with or against other cars in a typical DE event.

.....

This I know: I have participated in 8 to date and will be attending the PCA DE Instructor School as a Student Instructor in 3 weeks........have you ever been flat out in 3rd and crested a blind rise to be confronted by a car that has pulled up to a standstill mid track to rubber neck a Vette in the wall? (turn 4 Barber Motorsport Park) or had someone take the inside line in a turn where there is passing only on the straights with a distinct point-by? (turn 15, BMP) .......it's not necessarily you that's at fault. You may be fully in control of your car, others may not be.

I have Travelers, no exclusion clause for high performance driving events. Next time you renew, look into switching.

I have Allstate and my policies don't have an exclusion. they paid for a substantial repair to my old 996 after I brushed a tire wall at a track event. I'm looking into track insurance on the 997 though - I don't think they would be as accommodating a second time.

Not really. At SEARS Point you routinely see cars going in the walls. Laguna Seca also has such a history. three years ago a buddy of mine destroyed his car right in front of me. I even saw an instructor put his car in the wall at Thunderhill, which is normally a super safe track.

So don't be so sure about the "controlled environment" and don't forget: you won't always have an instructor next to you.

Let me see, in 40+ track days I have so far personally seen 4 cars either totaled or severely damaged. 3 of them driven by very experienced drivers, one by a rookie. (And I am not counting the F430 which spontaneously caught fire while lined up on the grid in SEARS point ;-)

You might be right since one can't count on other driver's skills and experience.

If you under-insure the car at say $50k and really badly damage it or total it and Locton pays the full $50k, who gets the trashed car? Can you then keep the car for scarp or parts?
