Default Trackday Helmets

I've got some trackdays planned this year and it's time to get a new helmet.

I've got a Shoei RF1000 and and a Uvex Onyx helmet but both are motorcycle helmets and not meeting the SA2010 standards for auto use. Also I have an old Bell but it's well out of date. Anyway, those may give you a sense of what fit I like.

I'd love to have a full face helmet because I like my face and I'd like to protect it. I also find that 9/10 times that I'm at the track it ends up being 90 fahrenheit so I'd love to find something with great air flow.

Any recommendations? What are people using at these PCA trackdays? Are there any good stores in the NYC area that have especially good selection?

Thanks

Might be worth considering something like the schuberth flip up... I've always dismissed that as a gimmick, but it's nice to be able to flip it up while waiting in the car to get on the track.

I am in the same boat. I have a motorcycle helmet but not a car helmet. My helmet is a flip-up and, while I have no experience with a helmet inside the car, the flip-up feature is VERY nice on a mc - esp in Houston.

Buying helmets w/o trying them on first is the same as buying shoes that way.
My head seems to fit in most helmets (I have a Bell) but a buddy of mine had to try like 10 helmets until he found the one that just fits right.

Much like asking what pair of shoes to buy, the right helmet is the one that fits your head! Many different shapes and fits. There will be one that feels good on you and that's the one you should buy.

Current certification is a must if you're looking for long term use

Bell M4 is a tremendous value and quite comfortable, IMHO.

I assume the vast majority of people are rocking a white helmet? I'm considering a black helmet. I already have several white moto helmets.

yellow 996- how is the airflow on the Bell M4?

For years now I was using an HJC basic model snell05 helmet. Quite comfortable but at DEs you could feel the weight after a few sessions.

These past Christmas I went nuts and I ordered a carbon fiber Stilo helmet with all the extras. However even the XXL was tight for my head which is a round 63... I had to return it and I went with a carbon Simpson devil ray. Very light, nice padding, they give you two screens, helmet bag, extra cheek pads. For 800 dollars I think it is one of the best deals out there and it is a snell 2010, so you can keep it for many years.

If you plan to track in the summer you want a white helmet. You should go to a shop that carries a variety of different brands and sizes and just try a lot on until you find one that fits (fitting helmets by mail order is inconvenient). It must be an automobile racing helmet, and you should get one that is pre-drilled for a HANS or other neck support device. I have never seen a modern racing helmet that did not have a flip-up faceplate.

I've found airflow on the M4 to be decent, but I also keep it open and wear glasses to protect my eyes from debris; that helps the airflow considerably. For DE, with 20-30 minute sessions, you'll be fine. I have even found it to be comfortable in a 90 minute enduro while racing.

+1 on white...I have a black back-up helmet and the temperature difference is noticeable.

Good to get the data points on white vs. black. Doesnt' seem sensible to switch to black except for those cool days (which happen never).

Raspritz- the flip-up helmet I'm referring to is a chin flip up schuberth. The chinbar flips in addition to the shield. I'm not quite sold on this though some people who feel a bit claustrophic like them.

Thumbs up for OG racing by the way. They were able to explain which shell sizes go with which fit sizes for the helmet I was considering. small+med fit= small shell, LG+XL fit=bigger shell etc. This info isn't even available on the mfrs website. Great info and it influenced which size I bought since I'm on the edge of sizing.

Stable Energies in NJ have a very great selection. I picked up a new helmet there yesterday, Brian was very helpful and patient as I tried on LOTS to find one that fitted perfectly. It turns out I am a 61, and most of the L size were too tight and the XL too big. The higher end Bells come in more granular sizing than L, XL, etc. I went with size 61 Bell Vortex GT in the end. Went for white vs rubberized black for 2 reasons... 1, better in hot temperatures, 2, better if I want to get it painted down the road.

Very happy :-)
