Nothing like getting behind TWO or worse THREE motorhomes in a row ..... Been there, done that. It is very maddening.....

Truthfully I don't know. We lived there for four years and whenever someone visited we would put them up in our home so it never came up. But Pechanga Casino is right in town and they may have a decent place nearby. You might also look into a bed and breakfast, I believe there were a few in the area. If you drive up Mt. Palomar make sure you do the South East run, it has some fast sweepers mixed in with some tight turns and a nice view for your wife (assuming you're not driving really fast).

Weekends can be a bit busy unless you go really early. Same seems to apply to most of California.

Most of the time I agree with you, but every now and then I view it as an opportunity to pass [at a high rate of speed].

I live in La Canada. Angeles Crest Hwy is congested with three things: CHP for the first 8ish miles, teenagers on motorcycles and tow trucks to fish them out of the canyon.

We have been there around this time of year and it can get congested. This is the best time that works for everyone so we will just have to be patient and enjoy the scenery!

Hit malibu canyon during the week, can get pretty busy during weekends. Mulholland and the main roads tend to be a lot of CHP, but the smaller roads tend to be a LOT less crowded and not patrolled heavily at all. I have never found the roads in malibu to be that busy, as in a lot of traffic, but there can be a lot of bicyclists on the weekends, and the end of Mulholland is a fav for motorcycles. i could sit there at the top all day watching the guys race up and down.

Other favorites: Any of the small roads in Santa Ynez Valley north of Santa Barbara, Palomar mountain, Angeles Crest (not this time of year, too cold, snow, and they use GRAVEL on the road), Temecula, I love the anzo borego desert out past Julian. Bottom line, there are too many fantastic roads in SoCal to hit.

Here's a pic from the top of Mulholland from Saturday this weekend. Was almost 80 out.

From left to right: Old Alfa Romeo, Old MG, my C2, GTR, Ferrari 275 GTS ( think), fully restored Jag e-type, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo (with a 6 spd!), mustang cobra, modded s2000, and a few others some interesting, some not.

As others have said, the 33 North from Ojai to the 166 is fabulous. Look for Tepusquet Canyon off the 166 that takes you to wine country southwest of Santa Maria (to Foxen Canyon, etc, then on to Los Olivos). Or the other way around. Either way! Gorgeous. The 33 is very lightly driven and largely in the middle of beautiful nowhere. Watch for popos on the 166, but it's beautiful.

I have only driven it South, so I come from the north, 5 to 166, south on 33, then 150 to 126 back to the 5, clearly the long way, but a heck of a lot more fun.
Basically an excursion from the grapevine.

If you're going to be in Monterey, you must hit the '17 mile drive'.

The entirety of Monterey and points south are spectacular though. Big Sur is especially awesome.

Don't stay at Pechanga. Try Temecula Creek Inn, South Coast has a hotel, so does Ponte Winery. South Coast has a nice spa as well, and would honestly be my choice. Let me know if you guys want to tour a winery. My wife works at one, she takes care of the VIP's. PM me if you want any details.

Also, South Grade is the tight side. East grade has the sweepers. After East Grade, you should go to Mesa Grande, more twistys.

I second South Coast Winery: http://wineresort.com/
My wife and I stayed there after our wedding at Ponte Winery
