She has 26000 miles and 6 years. No firing issues at all. I changed the coils because of age not mileage, and because once it is a mess of parts in the garage then why not. I plan to have PDK oil/filter changed (at a PCA recommended shop) because of age too.

Thanks a lot for the great write up! Put the car on stands, removed the wheels and once the mufflers are removed it's easy access. I had to cut (sawzall the top nut on the cat connection because it was rusted and it rounded off. Other than that it was straight forward. On to the drive belt.

I replace those six nuts off of the catalytic converters on a yearly basis. This cleans up the threads and makes this job much easier every four years.

Love seeing the pictures of those naked rear ends

For anyone with 7.2 GTS or X51 keep in mind it uses different plugs. We keep them in stock with free shipping.

I just finished 3 drivers side plugs. 1.5 hours wheel off to wheel on and one beer.

Followed excellent instructions but 2 quick tricks not mentioned.

1. Removed 2 cat nuts and rotated muffler hanger inward I think which made muffler removal with tips on easy
2. Remove middle quick connect to allow clearance to slide heat shield forward.

Will do passenger side tomorrow should take 1-11/4hrs
No bumper removal......will only increase time as the bumper did not really hinder in anyway.

Finished passenger side today as per op's great instructions

1. I removed the ground strap to make heat shield removal a little easier.

Car is idling smoother now at first observation

1 - 11/4 hours? Just did my division with the kids - that is 1 - 2/75 hours. Sounds about like my time table. (I know you meant 1 1/4). Anyway - you can't take enough pics.

Did you need the special curved wrench? I am going to tackle this in the next few weeks

No, I used a swivel adapter with extensions to get at the top cat nut. I'll post some pics. Passenger side heat shield is easier to get out by removing coil quick connects and ground strap. Again I did not remove the muffler tips to get the muffler out.

This is slightly above changing your oil in difficulty but not much. The serp belt was a little more tricky than this.

Oil change 1
Spark plugs 2
Serpentine belt 3

Rear bumper removal 1.5
Center muffler delete. 2-5 depending how rusted your cat nuts are.
Gundo hack 3

How do I know if I have a 997.1 or 997.2? I have a 2011 Carrera coup 911? Also, what plugs should I use? My dealer supplies NGK FGR5-QE @ $27.38 each. Pelican has only Bosch. Many thanks.

So, what are opinions on Bosch vs NGK plugs? I need to change mine soon, so I'm trying to figure out which way to go. I just have a stock 997.2 (MY2009). Is there any real difference between them?

just get the bosche for about $40 from ECS or pelican. I just did mine - took out the OEM and replaced with OEM (for $123 - didn't have time to wait for the mail order). But the OEM say bosche - and the only place I saw the word Porsche was on the box.

For what its worth I had my 997.2 in for a misfire problem at my indy and he offhandedly mentioned having seen problems with NGK on Porsche. He specifically mentioned NGK being a quality brand but something occasionally gave Porsches problems. No idea if it was year dependent, etc. Never saw a problem with Bosch.
