do the early X51 cars run the same risk with IMS and RMS for that matter, or were they built differently... mine is a 2008 so i don;t worry about it, but would be good to know...thanks, as always, for the great insight imparted here...can't really imagine a more widespread and complete knowledge base for these cars...
I was curious about this myself since X51 transplants seem to be popular for Cayman/Boxsters...
"Revised cylinder heads, new exhaust headers, camshafts with more aggressive profiles, a different Varioram intake plenum, and new programming for the Bosch Motronic engine management are utilized to add more grunt to the normal Carrera S's 3.8-liter flat six."
sounds like it's still in the 997.1 pool of potential for failure.
p.s.
Can you get an extended warranty from Porsche given that you're just out of warranty?
Right, depends on what "early" X51 means. X51 was introduced as an option in '06. All '06-'08 911 S cars have the same upgraded IMS bearing. I believe RMS is the same on all 997.1 cars. Early MY05 cars had the carry over IMS bearing design from the late model 996.
Bottome line, X51 neither reduces or increases the chance of IMS failure no matter which model year you have, it's the bearing itself.
WRONG! X51 comes on the later 997.1 engines which has the updated bearings, and NOT the earlier '05-'06 modesl with old bearings, prone to failure!
WRONG, X51 was available for MY'06 cars, which has the same bearing as '07-'08. Whether or not one can retrofit X51 to MY05 is another question.
As I said, it's the bearing that matters relative to potential IMS failures, not X51. You don't get a special bearing with X51, it's same bearing that normal S cars have relative to their model year. X51 gives no additional security over any similar model year S car without X51, or non-S for that matter.
X51 option package was about a ECU tune, Sport Exhaust, Headers, and some valve work and higher valve spring rate and bigger valves. Nothing really to do with the IMS bearing
No, you got the upgraded IMS, so you're good to go! X51 was the best implementation of 997.1 engines. You're lucky to have one!
i think so as well, i am so impressed with this car and i really don't have very much to compare it to, as far as other porsches or even other marques, but it sure makes me smile every time i even think about driving, me one lukkydukk kimosabi
Never heard of a x51 with failure though. Spoke to Porsche Sweden about it and they said they had not thougt about it but neither recall of any x51 with failure.
