Are the ramps completely removable, or do they just fold downward?

Completely removable. I opted for the light-weight aluminum ramps.

There are also inexpensive metal pieces that attach to the hinge pins that will hold the ramps up so they don't droop when the lift is up in the air. It allows you to park a car underneath without removing the ramps.

I agree with cairo. Opt for the aluminum ramps. The standard ones are extremely heavy and make installing and removing the ramps cumbersome.
