Default Water Pump

Any recommendations on whether or not to replace the water pump as a PM issue? 42,000 mi, not causing any problem currently. Early 2005 997 C2. Tried to search for previous postings but the search feature is rather random.

There really isn't a service interval for the water pump. The belt should be replaced every 6 years or 60k miles though. Have you replaced the belt yet ?

Excellence Mag published an article on this a few months ago and it caused quite a stir. Lots of folks now paranoid about their water pump and some are doing this as preventative maintenance. I remain undecided. I have no signs of any problem at 60,000 miles. I replaced my belt at 47,000 miles out of necessity as it was making noise and the edges were shredded.

Replaced belt (and plugs) at 40,000 since the car is over 8 years old.

This is a often discussed topic. I have an 07 S and have purchased the water pump and low temp thermostate just to have on hand. My lay person recommendation is to change the belt and while it is off spin the water pump and see if it feels like it should. I had a new one in hand for comparison. Mine felt great so I left it alone for now.

I have an 07 C2S with 51k miles and my water pump just failed on me two months ago. I was stranded on the side of the road in a good spot, but it could have been so much worse. The water pump was covered by my CPO, but it felt terrible to be stranded.

So for my situation, i travel on mainly well traveled roads with mobile phone coverage to call for a flatbed. If i traveled more remotely, then i would be much more concerned and i would probably treat this as preventive maintenance.

Seems like they all go at some point.. Changed mine at 60k, it was starting to make noise. It is a DIY job but a big PITA.

I think the pump is a good idea. USMC did a nice DIY. I'm not sure about the low temp thermostat. Modern engines are optimized at a specific temperature and lower that operating temp can cause issues. Even a few degrees isn't recommended.
