Default Possible to change a car (Targa) from 4wd/awd to 2wd/rwd?

I’m planning to buy a Targa, and need to decide whether 996 or 997. The main plus of the 997 for me is PASM, though what I’ve read is ambiguous re. whether a PASM equipped 997 can match the ride quality of the 996. (Where I drive, you can go faster and have more fun with Porsche’s softer suspensions than their harder ones, so for me, a well riding Porsche is win/win.)

On the other hand, the main plus of the 996 for me is that it’s not 4wd. So less weight, and better drifting.

But maybe a 997 Targa (all of which are 4wd) could be converted to 2wd? I read somewhere that some Lamborghini owners are converting their cars to 2wd, and while it would be a big modification, it mainly involves removing things, not adding them, which should help. Though maybe the software would need to be reprogrammed …

Anyway, anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks!

A PASM equipped car rides very nice in normal mode. With sport activated, the increased stiffness is significant.

wtf? Why would you even contemplate this? If you want a rear drive car, by the S.

Why a targa? Heavier roof. Older ones can leak. 997 better interior than 996. I have C4S 09 and I read somewhere that you can disengage AWD by one click on the e-brake. Not really sure if this is true and, if true, for what models/years? ride comfort, noise contributed by tires/ roads as well to factor in.

Drifting?
Buy something with a more neutral weight distribution, like a front engine car.
Once you break the rear loose on a Porsche, you do a 360 drift...

By buy the S, I assume you mean the standard coupe? To my knowledge, Porsche never built a RWD 997 Targa. (Am I missing something???)

But perhaps I should clarify, I mainly drift on snow (rarely on public roads) and on tight turns on race tracks. Sometimes on wet roundabouts too - something I'll not rush to attempt with a 911. Anyway, from what I've heard from friends and read elsewhere, 4wd 911s are much less fun to drift because it is very hard to control the drift angle.

From my perspective, lighter roof (it's lighter than the convertible). Anyway, I really like Targas, so I'll get one. Agreed re. interior, but I can live with the 996's. Very interesting that it might be possible to disengage the AWD, but not sure that would do it for me. There's still the extra weight. Since the Targa is indeed heavier than the regular car, I'm even more determined to watch the extra pounds ...

Check the Turbo forum. It's not uncommon for some Turbo owners to convert the RWD to simulate the GT2 driving experience. It was common when I had my 996TT.

If your '09 997 came with the electromagnetic clutch then you can find the fuse and remove it to disable the front drive. If it has the VC then there is no functional use of front drive anyway.
