Not many diss the M3. To me mine was a great car but it was a little bit of a compromise. It's based on a 3 series and therefore It's really a sporty 3 series and as such isn't the best sedan nor the best sports car. But pretty good at being either. The 911 doesn't really try and be anything than what it is. It's built to be a sports car not a sedan or a sporty 2 door coupe. I'd agree with the M3 performance being pretty similar to a 997.1 but a 997.2s tends to be a slightly better performer and more so at the track.

My remark wasn't intended to diss the M3 either. I love BMW M cars. In fact, I came very close to buying an E92 M3 Sedan to replace my aging E55 AMG. But if I could only have one, no doubt it would be the 911.

Granted it's just anecdotal but over the years I have known several M3 owners move up to 911s. I have never seen any 911 owners move to M3s, although it would be a great choice for those who need a back seat and don't have the funds to buy a 911 and a DD.

My 06 has the Power Kit and I am not ready to trade. My E28 M5 is still a lot of fun, but the Porsche outclasses it in every way except fun to drive.

06 with a power kit is a keeper.

Thanks for the great insight guys.

As somebody who won't be having kids in the next couple of years, a 911 was one of the cars i've wanted at a young age (Same with an M3). Better get it out of my system before the kids come.

Sorry but once it's in your system it doesn't leave so forget that plan.

Why? I have a 7 year old and a 8 year old. They love Porsches. And my son knows all the models. Plus they like going out in the fun car. That's why I don't have a GT3 or GT3RS yet no back seat. You can enjoy your hobby with them. Just have to have an SUV or a 4 door, or both in addition.

I would definitely go for the S, 3.8 vs 3.6 engine.
When I looked, the other key option was having the Sport option. This changes the response of the throttle. I have PASM, adjustable suspension, so car lowers as well with Sport engaged. 18 months ago I found my car for $63 and it had 22k miles.
My suggestion, continue to research, then choose minimum options you want, and find the car from there.
My next advice, buy the car locally. Then you can test drive it, look at it and drive it to the PPI. I am currently looking for a GT3 and I found that many cars are not what is represented, especially if price is lower than most. Be careful and good luck.

Although, saying in that, one dealer I do trust, Porsche of North Houston. Good reviews locally and a Premier dealer They currently have a 2007S, silver, black interior, manual, PASM, and turbo wheels for 55k. Only 25k miles.
