997.2 sound so unimpressive
#16
Don't confuse great sound insulation with quiet sound...
-PSE off is unimpressive. I agree to that. That said, it doesn't sound bad.
-PSE on is very nice. Still not very loud from inside the car, but nice grunt with the windows down (even parking with throttle kicks - its very aggressive). Try feathering at 2800-3200 rpm - you'll get a very, very nice note - see how long you can hold it.
-Listen to it from outside the car.
-Ignition sounds great...turns heads every time - even those outside the parking lot waiting to see what car comes out.
-6500rpm+, 3rd gear+. It howls. Oh god it howls.

The car sounds stealthy at idle. And BTW... it depends on the temperature of the exhaust - with far more grunt after a spirited run. It sounds quite purposeful when climbing past 5K RPM into redline any time it has that opportunity, which is where it matters. And incidentally... open the window to listen to the music. That is why the 991 has it piped-in via the Symposer [or VW's Soundaktor (same concept)], which creates a psycho acoustic performance enhancement that awes many, at least initially.
I rather have a stealthy understated performance car idling at a red light than a juvenile loud wannabe, doing 30MPH in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Since you're in a 997.2, eazy peazy....
Replace the center silencer with an X-pipe. About $900, and the car will sound like it should.
Or, go full Monte and get a Tubi, or one of the other aftermarket exhaust systems that replace the side mufflers, too.
The push rod V-8's will be drooling over your sound, although I must admit I love the sound of the Mustangs and Z06's.

Let's face it: the addition of the symposer is an acknowledgement by Porsche of just how lame the 911s engine and exhaust music is.

One word; Sharkwerks
If you don't like it, add PSE or Gundo, or Tubi.
IMO, the Sharkwerks is perfect. The right note and loudness, but not like you're looking for attention. My car gets enough attention. I don't want local authorities looking at me any harder than they need to.
The good thing is, the exhaust system can be changed in increments. And, if you find you keep changing parts, they will re-sell very easily here.

This is ridiculous! I can close my eyes and each time I'll know there's a Porsche around me. That takes a lot of engineering. I can close my eyes and I'll never know whether there's a Corvette,Mustang or a Chevy Tahoe next to me. They all sounds like a misfiring tractor.
The exhaust can easily be modified to give it a more aggressive German tuned sound.

Trust me on this.......nothing, NOTHING sounds like a flat plane crank Ferrari V8 ripping its way to the redline in all six gears. However, you will need trained EMTs standing by when your Ferrari dealer quotes you a price for any part on the car.
As for the 997.2, I am quite please with PSE and the Sharkwerks bypass. Not as sweet as my F430, but very good as Porsches go.

I'm not very familiar with 2 gen of 997 with its aditional mufflers, but the basics of engineering of a V8 vs flat6 will always make your car sound ...different If you can afford it, go with an AWE exhaust and I'm sure your car will regain its true identity. Anyway, once you upraded your exhaust get used - if not already - to flat6 sound and try to appreciate it for what it is A legendary efficient car vs fat lazy S'tangs and so. Kidding

forgive me for saying so, but if the car no longer pleases you consider getting into something else......nothing like resenting an auto for it's shortcomings......
not to be rude or condenscending of course.......
then again, is modding the exhaust an easy task on our cars? delete something or consider an exhaust upgrade?
good luck with it

OP is just stating the factory failed with OE exhaust (given changes in motor, etc.) - obviously one can get a new/different exhaust, headers, etc., he's not saying the car blows

Here's what I have discovered: The 997.1 needs the PSE to sound good. That's why I ordered mine that way after reading much about that on the Rennlist prior to ordering. I'm so glad I did. I leave it on 95% of the time.
When the 997.2 DI engines arrived they sounded quite feeble and in the MY09 year were quite bad. In time they perfected the PSE for the 997.2 cars and now they are fine. I am guessing that you have a MY09 car--right?

would love to know what 'German tuned sound' is....wonder if its patented like harley's twin.
