i live in germany and am lucky enough to be about an hour's autobahn ride from nordschliefe, last visit was in august, i am currently trying to find times when it is less busy...last time had 'stau-like' laps, kinda high-speed traffic jams, bbut it was a bit intimidating what with the vw busses and volvo combis among the ferraris AM's et al, still hard to beat...
I've done it 4 times while traveling to Germany for business. NEVER with my 997 though . I usually rent a race-spec smaller hatch (Suzuki Swift or Renault) and do 5-6 laps.
It's a HELL of a track, with incredible level of fun, and needs guts to do it right. To be honest, I think it's not that challenging per se, but more so difficult to learn due to the sheer size. Everytime I went there, it was very difficult to remember which corner was next and how flat out you could take it.
Highly recommended to anyone visiting Germany, should be on top of the list of to-dos for a petrol head!
