Had to drive the CR-V to the grocery store and to get gas tonight. Getting back into the car to come home I grabbed the key in my left hand and "went left." Happens once in a while when I've been driving the 911 a lot.
Very interesting... I'm curious about the validity of what I've heard now. The side ignition key on the left side is due to Porsche's racing heritage... specifically Le Mans. Shaves a split second between ingress and start up of the car. True or just urban legend? So what is the legend behind the center key for Saab?
Saabs have the ignition down behind the shifter for safety reasons - at least that's what I'd heard. They say it saves knees in accidents, keeping your knee from bashing into the key/ignition.

Don't know about the Saab but definitely true re: Porsche/LeMans as it allowed the driver to grab the ignition switch and gearshift simaltaneously after jumping into the car. I've seen this mentioned in Porsche's own literature and in the definitive book "Porsche: Excellence Was Expected".
BTW, I have 2 Porsches and an Audi and am also frequently reaching for the ignition on the "wrong" side.
