Without resorting to buying and retrofitting the X51 (carbon fiber) box into your 997 you have as optimal an air filter arrangement as was possible. Just recall that there is really very little to be gained by mickey-mousing around in that department. Maybe 5% more HP? You actually will do considerably better by optimizing the octane you area running. Since I see that you are also from California you are suffering from the crappy 91 Octane stuff that is robbing you of power. Careful use of octane additives to get it at least up to 93 octane will do far more than going at your engine compartment with a Dremel tool.
Here's the fancy dual filter airbox:

Best mod is:-
1. High flow filter in stock air box like BMC or K&N sounds nicer and improves throttle response, maybe 2-3BHP
2. Cap resonator and use a smooth intake tube, maybe 1-2BHP and much improved sound.
3. Remove resonator from air box, gives filter more surface area, needs DIYing out, but gave me a proven 4BHP gain.
So working with the stock air box can yield some extr horses but the best improvement is noise.

I'm on the fence with this smooth has and cap for the resonator. What exactly does this resonator do? If you remove the resonator is there a DIY to do it? BMC and K&N use an oil gauze filter and I've heard that the oil can get on your air sensor.

Edgy you are so correct on the cold air thing. However Porsche engines to me have not been much to look at...a Ferrari engine is sexy!

Yap, not much of the 911 engine can be seen and admired thus no effort is made in making them look sexy. As a car enthusiast I love to look at the heart and soul of the car aka engine. The 991 is even worse, you just see 2 fans and a plastic shroud. The Boxster and Caymam..... nothing till you drop the engine.

Actually, a 356 Carrera GT is is nearly impossible to replace today. Greg was fortunate to have purchased many years ago many parts to keep that engine alive. He recently got the engine back from Wyoming where a specialist in such things rebuilt it for him. Much of it is shared with the Porsche RSK. That stuff simply doesn't grow on trees.
Never cared much for the extensive use of plastic in today's engine areas. However, weight and cost and two very important factors that drive today's material selection and designs.
I thought the Rennlist group here would appreciate the contrast between 1958's top of the line Speedster Carrera GT and their cars.

It's always interesting to compare the regular old run of the mill engine of the day with the sportiest of the same vintage. Here's a 1964 356C engine compared to the exotic 1958 Carrera GT engine:

As I reported earlier, I always used 94 octane, 0% ethanol (that's available locally), whenever I travel south to US and use the 10% ethanol, 91-92 Octane, there is a noticable power down... 100% noticable, even engine sound is different!

So, if there is no power to be gained by using CAI, why does P offer one? Is it only for people who are willing to spend major dollars for a prettier box? Or are they quoting improved performance?

I think you missed the conversation entirely. All 997s come with a CAI by default.
Porsche does not offer one because all the 997s are equipped that way from the factory. You are simply confusing the prettier carbon fiber intake of the X51 and other special induction systems with the factory 997 intake. ALL 997 intakes are cold air, because the air comes from outside the engine area.
