Hi, I have a, new to me, 997.2 C2S (2009). The car is in excellent condition all over, very pleased with it. I am having trouble with the exhaust tip though. When the car arrived (delivered to me from CA), the car was dusty but clean, the exhaust tips were totally black. I have cleaned the car a few times now (including a full clay bar, protectant, polish, etc detail). I haven't tackled the exhaust tips because I don't know what the tips are supposed to look like? The car is completely stock, so my question is - what is underneath this blackness and whats the best way to get them clean (is there any easy way to remove the tips for cleaning?)

Absolutely not. It seriously takes me less than 30 seconds to clean them. At 19 months and 6K miles the tips still look new.
Here's a shot of my exhaust after a 50 mile spirited drive, this is before cleaning it.

I had a go at my tips today. I used some advice from various forums. First I washed the tips thoroughly with the water I had been using for my wheels. Then I washed the car a normal. There wasnt much difference on the tips, but my wheel sponge was totally black! So i Guess some of the carbon came off! Once I had finished washing and drying the car, I got some bar keepers friend and some OOOO wire wool. I used a micro fibre cloth and the barkeepers friend, took about 20 mins per side to get most of the deposits off, just good old fashioned elbow grease. Then I used the OOOO wire wool to get the most stubborn deposits off. The results were pretty fantastic to be honest. I ordered some simichrome as recommended here as the tips are a little dull given I dont think they have seen the light of day in some time. Here are the results, I will have another go in a couple weeks with the simichrome to see if I can get them completely clean and shiny again.

If you want to put something on them so they clean up easier the next time you clean them, don't use wax. It has a melting point of 160-165 F. It will flash off.
Use a synthetic paint sealer instead, with a much higher melting point.
