considering buying a heavily modified 997
#16
The car is worth only as much as you are going to pay for it. In general, modifications should not be value added on the price unless the buyer wants them and was planning to purchase them anyway. The car may (probably) be difficult to sell when you are tired or finished with it. Most buyers would not even think the mods are necessary or desirable at all and would point to major risk the car was abused at some point. I agree that if you are considering the price to be acceptable for any car, you can get a lot newer less modified car and easier to resell for the same money and you won't have to worry about the IMS issue. My '05 car blew up at 17K and has a new engine. Failures are out there. Ultimately, if the engine fails with this car, you will need to add another $20-25K to the price. Take a look at it with THAT price tag and ask yourself it it is still worth it.

Probably has $50k in Aftermarket Upgrades. Only you can justify how much value these upgrades bring to you and youre enjoyment of the car.
I like it but I'm more of a Stock Porsche guy. All this Techart stuff could be a turn-off to some Porsche Owners. I suspect most of the guys on 6speed would love it.
Post some picks and don't forget the bikini model.

all bling and no go for $65K...
I will sell my all go and no bling car for $60K any time if there will be anybody here who wants a gt3 eater.
$45K is what I would pay for that car, only good mods there are brembos and gt3 seats. PSS10 is an ok system but it is not JRZ or motons, so, not much bang per buck there, front lift is nice, but, also not much bang per buck and only adds extra weight.

most of you guys do not realize that cars cost more here in Canada (on average 20%). So, if this car is 65K, on Canadian market its only over priced by around 10K (+/- 3000)
Regargless of that, have the car checked, if its mechanically sound and you like it, go for it.

I wouldn't buy an '05 w/ a stock engine. Unreliable and frankly, not enough hp. I understand that you are in Canada and things cost more, but in the states that would be a $40K car.
At the very least you need to leave room in the deal to pay for a redo on that engine, about $23K American if you catch it before it blows.

For a Canadian car, it's not that bad of a price, the bucket seats alone (if OEM) are $$$... however, I am veru much against modded 911s, and in most cases it doesn't add value to a car, while devalues it. It all depends if you *like* those mods, I haven't seen pics to know if it's done tastefully or not, but if you love those, then go for it.
The other issue is that this is 2005 car, and with older IMS bearing which may fail, therefore, you should take into account the cost of upgrading the IMS and possibly RMS which with labour costs $3-5K.

I realize most of the Porsche community frowns on mods (especially cosmetic ones), but I actually like the "garish" look of this one. I guess it's the boy racer in me... kind of strange considering my Sti has all go and no show mods.
The owner says he will do the IMS bearing upgrade if that's what it takes to do the deal, but I haven't discussed money at all. He'll have to come way down in price based on what I've read here for me to entertain buying the car.
anyone familiar with the "stage 1" ECU flash on this car? Would it even come close to matching the HP performance of a "S" car or is that wishful thinking?

Bearing upgrade is no small feat. No need to crack the case, but the tranny must be dropped. If you do, consider replacing the clutch and RMS at the same time. It will save you the cost later.

The MY05 non-S cars are essentially 996 engine cars. They are they the ones everyone talks about when it comes to a reliability issue. All the cosmetic mods in the world won't help you out when something catastrophic happens to that engine.
