Magnetic numbers - do they come off at speed?
Here's another newbie tracking question:
I had some magnetic numbers made - see attached pic. Do they tend to fly off at speed?
Also, I've heard they might scratch paint due to slight movements at speed.
Am I better off printing some big numbers on 8.5x11 paper from my printer and taping them to my rear side windows?
Thanks in advance.

I have magnetic numbers (square instead of round magnets). Thus far, I have only used them at Pikes Peak Int'l Raceway and High Plains Raceway. I would guess my max speed on the long straights to be somewhere around 130-140. They stayed on with no issues.
I have not noticed any paint scratches either.

I use magnetic numbers (individual ones in a sequence) on doors and reusable vinyl on trunk hood and rear deck lid. I ordered from a custom place (Solo Performance Specialties) that makes them at order and their quality is very good. As long as you clean the surface with a waterless wash prior to attaching magnetic numbers they work great, and hold well at speed. My data point is <=150mph. Reusable vinyl needs a detail spray or spray wax as surface prep so they come off without damage to the numbers themselves. Never had any paint scratches with either. But I do inspect them after each run to ensure they are still attached properly.

I use magntetic numbers. A signal magnet with my number I had made for around $35.
I spray some detail spray on the door before applying and then add a very small piece of racers tape at the front as a safety measure.
Dozens of days without a problem.

Yes magnetic numbers fly off. We used to use them on my dad's race car ('75 911, pic attached) with tape. They worked for a while but inevitably you'll have a corner worker bring you a shredded magnet.

Lots of experience with magnetic numbers. On the larger numbers like you have you will need to tape them down, especially the leading edge. They will fly off if you don't. My neighbor took a sheet of white magnetic material used to cover havac vents and cut out 6" small numbers for the doors and hasn't had any problems with losing them.
I used static cling numbers I got from gochecker.com

Can't recall which company it is, but on their website they warn about possible scratching of the paint underneath the magnetic (and they sell magnetics, in addition to other types).
I have magnetics (about 12"x12"). I put a layer of racers film on the door first. Then I put the magnetic on top of that film. Then I put another layer of film on top of the magnetic (sort of like a magnetic sandwich) to hold it on. After about three 20 or 30 minute stints, the leading edge starts to come up, and I have to add one strip of fresh film over the leading edge. I had all this blow off on the front straight at Barber MSP.

I also had magnetic numbers made and never had any issues with them flying off. As mentioned above, make sure the painted surface is clean and the magnetic number adheres flush. If a leading edge is not flush, it will come off.
Go with thinnest magnetic numbers.
