Default 2011 997S question

I've narrowed my search for a replacement Porsche to two cars. One of them is a new 2011 997S with only 104 miles on the odometer. The price has been reduced from over $100K to $89K. This sounds like a nice discount until you consider that 2013 991s will be released shortly. So it will soon be a 3 year old model. I expect that I would take a big depreciation hit if I had to sell in the near term, 1 - 2 years. Another concern that I have is that I've read that it's a risk buying a car that has lingered on a Dealer's lot for a long period of time. Granted that I have four years to identify any problems which would be repaired under warranty, but I don't want to waste a lot of time at the Dealer.

Since Porsche is very secretive about their factory to Dealer rebates, I have no idea if Dealers are getting any help to sell their 2011 997s from Porsche. If not I expect that the Dealer is selling this car near his cost. What do you guys think?

Here's the option list:

Equipment 541 - Ventilated Seats (Front)
686 - XM(R) Satellite Radio Receiver
680 - BOSE(R) Surround Sound System
672 - Extend Navigation Mod-PCM 3.0
P36 - Infotainment Package
342 - Heated Seats (Front)
267 - Self Dimming Mirrors
P15 - 12-Way Power Seats
XRR - 19" Carrera Sport Wheel
640 - Sport Chrono Package Plus
603 - Bi-Xenon headlights incl. PDLS
176 - Sports Exhaust System
P17 - Sports Suspension
P35 - Comfort Package

An 11% discount on a 3 year old model is not a significant discount. If you really like the car, I would offer 70K and not pay above 75K.

What color is it? The options seem reasonable. Why has it been sitting on the lot all this time?

No way they are going to sell it for anything near 75k unless its an absolutely ugly color like the ipanema blue that was posted here a week ago.

If you're willing to spend around 90k I'd see if you can find a low mileage GTS. I was looking at used C2S cars in the 80 to 85k range and couldn't close on one and scored big for just a little more than my original budget for a GTS with less than 1,200 miles.

When the 2013 cars are introduced the MY11 car will be considered two years old--not three.

Based on just the information above, I entered the options into truecar.com and came up with an estimated MSRP of $104,495 and an estimated Factory Invoice of $93,311. Keep in mind that this is only an estimate since color and a few other things you may have left out could effect the price. Given this info and my market area (Pittsburgh, PA) truecar.com shows on similar optioned cars sold, the average price was between $82,185 (20.3% discount) and $83,310 (21.4%).

You also didn't mention if the warranty has already been "punched" or started which could give you some negotiating leverage since I don't think the car can be CPO'd if it has never been titled. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken but I looked at a 2011 last year that had never been titled but already had a year of warranty gone because the dealership "punched the warranty" and they couldn't CPO the car because it had never been titled.

Without knowing anything about what dealer incentives may be available, you could try $75k but with these options and mileage on an "S" model I think $79k-$82 would be a really good price.

Good luck...

P.S. If you decide to pass on this car, PM me the dealer info and car location. Sounds like one I would consider also.

Ohiolefty did the homework. And his price range makes sense. With trunk money that the dealer likely received, it should be no more than those numbers.

Also, good advice to make sure the remaining warranty is the full 4 years.

Yea, but he said "3 year old model". So that would be 3 not 2, "model years".

yes. If the wrrty clock has started and CPO is not an option, consider getting a factory extended wrrty or service plan into the deal.
I think you have the leverage here.

+1. Based on my experience, I agree with the above. no more than $80k on this car. $89k is waaay overpriced.

Thanks guys. I should have stated a 2 year old model, not 3. Just a mistake on my part. Here's a link to the car:

http://towson.porschedealer.com/preo...69937/info.php

BTW The asking price varies day to day.

I agree that's not a good discount.

The car's age means it already has a lot of depreciation in it, and the worst of the depreciation are the first couple of years.

Even worse is the fact that it is "new" but has 100+ miles. How many test drives has this car experienced? How many of those times involved the car at high revs without the proper break-in period?

Has the car been a loaner car for the dealer?

The only DFI engine I would be willing to buy would be the Lexus V6, DFI+SFI, no intake valve EGR fouling. Even better would be a throttle body fuel injector, or 2, keep the entire intake manifold and the intake valves free of EGR deposits.
