Default PPI on a CPO car?

I've read in this forum that even with the purchase of a CPO car from a dealer that you should get a PPI done. If I am getting the car at a dealer in the middle of nowhere, how does that work? Do I get the dealer to do the PPI with their own service dept (I imagine NOT)? Or do I ask them to drive it to the Indy of my choosing (perhaps 50-75 miles-100 away)?

Just to be clear, what is the reasoning behind doing the PPI? If I have a CPO (and a bit of time on the original warranty) couldn't I just do a PPI after purchase and tell them to fix the issues (for EG. a RMS leak or hard to see body damage)? Is a PPI done for price negotiation purposes?

Thanks!

If the car has CPO, by definition it's been PPI'ed to get the CPO completed. I bought my latest 911 from a dealer in IL (I'm in VA), and didn't have an additional PPI done. It arrived in immaculate condition. Make sure the dealer has a solid reputation, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. Any problems that pop up will be covered under your CPO. Check inside the door jamb for the CPO sticker. Also, they should ship with a packet that covers CPO, etc. Finally, when the car arrived, I took it to my local dealer for my state inspection and a general look-over.

Good luck!

I would get separate ppi. I bought CPO car sight unseen with only 13k miles. When arrived 2 syncros bad fixed under warranty but also all shocks were shot not covered. Also couple of body panels loose
Not sure if ppi would have picked up shocks on street driving But first day at track it was obvious. Get ppi so you can decide if u want any of the untold baggage. I will next time. GL

Hey Chris, thanks for your response. I hadn't considered buying the car from out of state dealer. What were the additional costs? I'm from CA, are all US sold Porsches (I'm looking at a 2009) CA emission approved?

Thanks mkk62, it's a pity that the PPI done at the time of CPOing seems to sometimes be so cursory. I'm guessing Indy PPIs are more comprehensive?

Get the PPI... trust the dealer and CPO at your own risk. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...r-cpo-car.html

BTW, some Indy's will travel but charge you extra for it. Still well worth it.

I didn't get a PPI on my .2 CPO purchase. After the dealer pulled the DME I was OK with the car. I did get under it and review the car as best I could on my own (I'm handy with cars, not a porsche expert). The dealer was up front and showed me not only he PPO checklist but the full "fix" list of things they did on the car, which included oil/filter change, brake flush, 2 tires, a paintless dent door ding removal, and a bumper touch up (whoever did it did an amazing job, I can spot most paint repair easily, this was well done). No regrets on it.

That said, many Indy's will travel, you just have to work with them, they'll charge you for it.

Search on here you'll find a lot of Porsche specialists in LA.

My inner cynic insists that the dealership's precertification PPI is only concerned with those items which would be covered under the CPO. Thus the impending demise of such items as brake pads and rotors, clutch, shocks, etc. may well be disregarded. As well, I'm rather skeptical of the dealership's inspections in general. Every time I bring my car to the dealership they give it a so-called inspection...last time it seems my rear brake pads had regenerated themselves since the last inspection...went from a tick in the yellow box to the green.

I bought my 2009 C2 CPO out of state. Only additional cost was transport. I used a great local LA high end car closed carrier company to get it from Mississippi to Los Angeles. All 2009 Porsches are CA smog legal, but my bank refused to approve my loan until I got the car to California and smog/titled it. A hastle because I had to cover the full $70k in cash up front (to wire xfer private seller) but otherwise it was a breeze. No issue with smog. Passed with flying colors.

Daberlin, thanks ! All very helpful info...how did that work with the money? Once you wired the money, what assurances did you have he would send the car? I'm a noob in this area.

I'll search for LA indys that will travel.

To those that had bad experiences, sorry to hear it. The dealer I purchased from (Isringhausen) did a phenomenal job on the car. Fresh brakes, new Pzeros, full detail, etc. - above and beyond IMO.

As far as I know, all cars sold in the US are 50-state legal unless specifically mentioned (there have been occasions where certain diesels, etc. were 49-state legal).

I bought a CPO C4S from out of state from a dealer. I knew the dealer from buying a car from him a few years earlier (wife's new Boxster). I would recommend an indy PPI as I believe they look at different things rather than the 110pt or so checklist to replace the tires, fluids, etc. A liitle more scrutiny will give you more piece of mind in the long run.

A good independent PPI should also be able to recognized a car involved in an accident, and evaluate the repairs. Not sure all dealer would disclose
