This just happened. Coming off a stop light shifting from first to second, nice and easy (around 3K rpm) and I heard a soft "pop" from the rear and the clutch now feels limp. Still comes up, but not as firmly and shifting is now not as smooth. Ideas?

I think there is a spring that pulls the pedal back. The pop may have been the spring breaking. I have read about this issue somewhere before. May have been on the 996 forum, but I think the mechanism is the same.

My car did this and it turned out to be a failed pressure plate. I believe it is a fairly common problem. I believe there are more clutches changed due to this part failure than there are for a work out clutch.

Well...it turned out to be a clutch replacement due to "premature failure" at 46K miles. I am the third owner of my CPO car and although it is in fantastic condition, there was no way of knowing how it was driven previously. I guess that't one of the few risks with CPO's
