Most issues were resolved by the MY06 cars (997.1). Why a C4? Keep in mind that the pre MY09 cars were very simplistic AWD systems that use a viscous clutch system to transmit power up to the front differential. By the MY09 997 they adopted the 997 Turbo electronic system that was more based upon the Carrera 4 from 1989 and the similar vintage 959 super car. For many many years Porsche was hesitant to expect reliability from a sophisticated AWD system so they kept it really simple with the viscous clutch design. Reliability has come a long way since 1989.
I have owned my '06 C4 for 5+ years with no problems @ 47,000 miles. I live in the Seattle area & really value the extra capability of the AWD in the rain & snow. I take it up snowshoeing & skiing. The AWD may not be as high tech as the 997.2, but it works fine for me. The 997.2 has the DFI engine with fewer moving parts & more power. Unfortunately that engine does not sing like like the 997.1, & to me, that is a deal-breaker. My engine @ 2700 RPM still gives me chills.

I agree. My -09 PDK is a rocket compared to the -06 6sp but as for exhaust note there's no arguing which sounds better. I had Tubi on both and that raw growl on the -06 just isn't there on the DFI engine. Even with a Tubi system that costs $1,000 more than the already expensive one for the 997.1. It's still good but a bit higher pitched with less of the old style grunt. More "euro" some would say.

THere is a simple fix for the 997.2 exhaust sound. Replace the center muffler with Sharkwerks pipes, which will imporve the sound. I did that and also added PSE. The muffler sound of my 997.2 is awesome.
Finally, I am going to see the car this weekend.
I think the price is right, and I am going to bring it to a PPI.
Since this is a early 997 (2006), have 68k mileage, and the owner never
updated the IMS, should I update the IMS as soon as I get the car?
Also, is there any sound or noise I should be looking for during test drive to avoid this car?

Thanks,

It's very hard to say *when* IMS was updated, there were like a few threads on this.
But, it looks like, IF the car has built date in 2006, it's updated, if it's built in 2005, it may or may not have been updated.
So, check the *build date* of the car (not when it went into market, or service-date), that helps determine if it's got the new IMS or not.
