Default Oil gauge question

The oil gauge on the far right side of the dashboard...I swear I have seen the needle go up and down while driving in the past.

This morning, the needle was on 5 at all times. Do I need to be concerned?

Thanks.

That is the oil pressure gauge. When the oil is cold the pressure will remain high at all times until it gets hot. When the oil is at operating temp ( approx 200 - 210F, gauge on the left) the oil pressure will vary according to rpms. When the at idle it will be somewhere around 2. At 3000 rpm it will be back up at 5.

The oil level gauge is different. When starting your car, turn on the ignition without first without sarting and without depressing the clutch pedal. After a few seconds you can see the oil level. Those bars are measuring the top quart or so out of several ( ~7) quarts.

Ok, I thought I was losing my mind. I do remember the gauge needle fluctuating up and down while the car is driven. Today the needle mostly stayed on "5" even at idle even after driving it for approx 50 miles.

After 50 miles of driving, 5 does seem high at idle.

if by "the needle was on 5 at all times", you mean no matter if youre on the gas or not, at idle or at speed, then yes you have a problem and should get it checked out.

Yes, the needle stays on 5 mostly irregardless of gas or not. It'll dip down very briefly (1-2seconds) then stays on 5 again.

I hope it's covered by CPO. Thanks.

Could be a bad ground or connection at the sending unit. I've the problem in the past and it was a poor connection on the sending unit.

The dealership I purchased the car from told me to bring it in if it has not corrected by itself within a day or two. SA also stated it's normal to see that scenario if the oil is not warm enough but still does not explain the occurrence since I drove the car for approx 50 miles.

Where as, another dealership close to my work said "It's normal".

It's not normal. Ask the p-dealer if you can test drive one of the cars within your model type(997.1 or 997.2) from their lot for a comparison. Hopefully they'll stop giving you blow off answers... after all why would Porsche build in an oil pressure gauge if it stays constantly at 5 bars. A simple light would have sufficed.

for the same reason they have a temp gauge that really doesnt function as it appears. i.e. despite the needle and all the numbers, it really only registers 3 states: "cold/off", "normal" and "overheated". (and the 3rd state is almost useless since by the time the gauge hits 250 and the warning light goes on there's a good chance your engine has already sustained damage because the temp is more like 300+).

crazy germans.

LOL. An SOL or WTF light would have been more effective for the water temp. I suppose it's like the Chronometer on my watch. Rarely used but fascinating just the same.

The pressure and temp explaining makes sense.
I think there is also a relation between the slope of the road...my level seems to vary depending on that.

The oil pressure gauge started working normally again. I hope it is a one time incident.
