2006 997S, 6 speed manual, 31K. Every so often at a light when I shift from N to 1st to take off, it doesn't want to go into 1st. I never force it, if I quickly go to N and back to 1st it usually slides in like butter-- but sometimes it takes two trips to N, or releasing and re-engaging the clutch. By then someone is honking from behind at the jerk in the Porsche.
Notes:
-Yes, clutch is all the way to floor
-Happens more when car is not up to operating temp
I've been doing it for years. Even on cars that don't need it. Second, back to first. Like a bad habit, but never an issue.
I just re-clutch, i.e., let off the clutch, then depress the clutch again. Works for me and if you read through that thread you'll see it makes perfect sense.
Foot off the clutch, gently, very gently push the shifter towards first, push the clutch in and it will go in every time.
Props to this post!! I read your post in the previously referenced thread. I recommend reading his complete post regarding the issue--gives great insight and understanding if you aren't well versed in the mechanics of manual transmissions.
From San Rencho's previous post: "Its really simple. When at a dead stop, if you put the clutch in the input shaft stops. If it happens that the input shaft sprocket, by chance, is tooth on top of tooth with the 1st gear sprocket, it will balk. The solution is, right before you put it into 1st, before you push in the clutch, put very slight pressure on the gearshift towards 1st gear, then. push in the clutch and it will go into gear every time."
1st gear syncros sometimes are difficult to engage. If you go into 2nd first it never happens. As I am an idiot who drives stick in a Boston traffic, trust me, it works. There is nothing more annoying then trying to push into 1st gear when it does not go. And if you push it too hard you will tear plastic shift cable ends.
Great stuff. Just got thru the 5 page thread referenced above, and it all makes sense now. I was reclutching and it has worked. Can't wait to try some of the techniques in the am. Thanks all.
