Default 997 Christmas Tree Episode

All,

Posting on behalf of my Dad...He was out in the 997S and all of a sudden all of the idiot/warning lights in the dash went on and now he has no electric power - can't roll up the window, get into the front trunk, etc.

I had this happen on the 964 and it ended up being the alternator, but I would be suprised it is the alternator on a 4 year old car with around 10k miles on it.

Any thoughts? Also, is there any way to get into the front trunk without battery power for the electric motor?

Thanks,

Skip

Alternator or battery are the things I would check first. Could be a loose wire or battery cable also. Was the battery charged regularly through the winter?

If the charge gets too low lead acid batteries can freeze and damage the internal plates.

Thanks Crhistopher - he had the battery go dead on him in the past, so now keeps it on a charger all the time. Would that affect it?

So, how can he gain access to the front trunk without battery power to check the battery connection and/or any fuses?

Thanks,

-Skip

My 997.2 has a lug that you pull out in the fuse box for a positive connection to another battery. Ground the negative to the door hinge and you can get enough juice to open the frunk.

You can also use the battery charger - connect ground to the door hinge then the positive to a red (I think) tab (looks a little like a fuse), its near the right top of the fuse box (but check your manual if possible).

Once you have access to the battery measure the battery voltage:
It should be approx 12 to 12.5 volts with engine off and no major accessory on (this is indicative of the battery condition)
and approx 13.4 to 14 volts with the engine idling (indicative of the alternator charging)
