Default Gear oil change

About a month ago I started a topic about changing the gear oil in my 07 S. There was much debate and the input was great. I decided to go ahead and use Mobil Delvac 75/90 instead of Shell Transaxle which can only be purchased from the dealer at $42 a quart. I ordered the Delvac online for $42 a gallon. This is not Mobil gear oil you get in quart containers locally, it is Mobil Delvac. Anyway, I put it in and it shifts great. It has been cool here in Oregon and on cold start in the morning it shifts at least as well as the factory fill. I changed the oil not because of any issue, but because the car is now five years old. It only has 18 thousand miles. The oil was starting to show some darkness and the drain plug was full of black gunk. Not sure it needed changing, but done now. A couple of observations on the job itself. Very easy. I did have a brief WTF when I discovered two fill locations on the passenger side of the transmission. I first removed the one slightly higher and at the rear of the transmission near the drive shaft. I stuck my little finger in and could not reach the oil. I then removed the forward one and it started dripping. Drained it and filled back with a small hand pump from a gallon jug. Took a little over three quarts before it started running out. I replaced all the gaskets with new ones and they are 18 MM the same as the motor oil plug. I will let everyone know if the Delvac blows it up or for some other reason I am not happy with the shifting....so far so good.

Thanks for update. I am about to change mine. I am gonna go OEM for now, as I am still under Warranty and don't wanna give Porsche ANY REASON to deny warranty claims in the future, OEM is freaking expensive though, at like $40/litre!

Hey gla,

Are you talking about changing the fluid in the manual gear box? I thought this was every 12 years or 100K+ miles.

Thanks.

I used Red Line gear oil - 2 quarts 75W90 NS and 2 quarts 75W90 non-NS.

Yes the book says to do it at 12 years, but being **** and over servicing is my nature. A respected Porsche race engine builder I speak to occasionally told me that it does not hurt to keep the fluid clean and replace it much more frequently. He is also the person who said to use Mobil Delvac as it is what they use in all 997 manual boxes. I also change my motor oil before 5000 and use Motul 5/40. I also changed spark plugs at 18000 miles, but I guess that was over four years. Probably not required, but cheap easy maintenace. I changed my former 996 gear oil at 50000 miles and ten years and it was black filthy. Should have been done much sooner.

I fully understand, all indicators of a true "car guy". I will have them look at mine too at next service, mine is an 06 with 22K miles.

I just changed my transmission fluid (used OEM), and it definitely improved shifting, and totally recommend it for anyone who tracks.

Oil was like $30/litre (locally), check Sunset/Suncoast for oil cost, labour, cannot be exact, I did it as part of a brake flush/pad replacement/seat replacement that cost me $350 altogether (at indy).

Yes, they are the same size gasket as the oil drain plug. 18mm if I recall.
