Default Oil Filter Wrench

Do I need to use the Porsche oil filter wrench or can I use the band style wrench instead? I've use this band style wrench on my Audi and BMW. What are your thoughts?

if it fits you should use whatever you have on hand already... I have the Porsche wrench and don't see anything special about it other than it fits the stock/standard housing.

I use the OEM cap I got from Suncoast and torque to spec (17-19ft/lb) but you could use a small fabric strap wrench from K & D and estimate the torque. Just don't crack the oil filter cup.

no need to spend $40 bucks unless you just love the look of the OEM. Advance auto parts has a 14 flute 74-76mm filter wrench for $5 works excelllent. It is documented on this site(somewhere).

your call.

Perfect....thanks for the help. I don't find the search option very helpful on this site but maybe I'm going about it wrong. Whenever I try to search for "Oil Change" I get a ton of threads from all the discussion forums instead of just' the 997 forum so I need to figure this thing out.

So I went and picked up one of the cheap plastic tools and all it did was slip on the filter housing. Maybe there is something to the metal one from Porsche.

Also, do you guys fill up the filter housing with oil before putting it back on? I do it just as a precaution so I don't get too much air pushing through the motor.

Have done two changes w/o doing this. No issues so far but this seems like a good idea. Will try it next time.
