Thanks all. I just made an appointment with my local independent to have the rears replaced with N2 PZeros. Decided not to replace all 4 with SuperSports as the front PZeros have a fair bit of tread still. When the fronts are shot I'll then move on to a set of four of the latest (supersports or whatever).
How old are the tires? Grip will fall off dramatically after 5 years or so.
IMHO It's not worth it to stay with the P-Zero's. Replace all 4 with PSS.
Can someone tell me what the tread depth is on a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's is?
The set I have is 3.75 years old and has about 16k miles on it. (none track).
I'm trying to decide if I buy two new rear tires only or just replace all 4 at this time, based on the tread left in the front tires. (which are undamaged, just one rear tire has a sidewall bulge)
For the 18's: 295/35ZR18 (99Y) SL N4(Porsche) it indicates 8.5 / 32nds of an inch.
The rear currently has 7.5 / 32nds of an inch still on it... so most of the tread is still there.
They are 3.5 years old and the car has 16k miles on it, BUT I only run them half the year with the other half having the winter tires on the car, so the tires have probably seen:
1.8 years and about 8,000 miles of road use. (but the rubber has a calendar age of about 3.8 years I think)
So at this point, I think I'll just replace the back two tires for now.
So you are now going to pay $100 more for each rear tire than you would had you switched to the PSS.
That would have paid for most of the third tire.
You are now sentencing yourself to old tire technology for the foreseeable future.

I understand the difficulties of getting rid of perfectly good fronts. I have a set up PS2 N1 and the rears have another 3K on them but the fronts have a ton a mileage left. But they are 2008 manufactured so the age is getting up there so MSSPs will be on my shopping list next season, with great reluctance in giving up perfectly good fronts. But the numbers do not crunch well to just replace rears with PS2 N1s.
My preference is Tire Rack.
No shipping if you pick up at their depot.
Also... while you may not have driven on those fronts for some of the time, that does not stop the tire from aging.
Aged front tires are very little fun....

You make it sound like there is some huge leap in tire techology from the PS2 to the PSS, as if the PS2s are some steam-punk era concoction. I'm not sure the jump is that much.
I don't even see PSS (Michelin Pilot Super Sport) as an option on TireRack for 18" wheel, 2009 Targa 4.
It looks like they don't exist in 295/35ZR18 size.
Given the amount of tread left on the tires I may just replace the one tire with the bulge.
