Engine Ticking
Hello all, not too knowledgable about my 09 997.2s, so is it normal to hear a slight ticking noise when stopped, and idleing. Engine warm. 3k miles
Any opinions would be appriciated
Car is still under warranty for another 15 months.

The slight ticking when at idle is the fuel injectors...totally normal....the ticking after you turn it off is hot oil flowing back down the engine and the metal parts like exhaust and so forth settling.

FWIW I have the exact same ticking and it is almost impossible (for me) to make an audio of it. Funny thing is you can only hear it when you are inside the car. From the outside it's not noticeable. Best I can tell the ticking comes from the hump right behind the rear seats. My mechanic (Manni at Porsche of Livermore, for those of you who are local) told me that it wasn't anything that needed attention. Like you (the OP) I'm under warranty but I had the car serviced just to be on record w/ PCNA that the "problem" couldn't be replicated or observed. You may want to do the same just to have a paper trail in case it turns out to actually be significant after the warranty is up. This may give a bit of standing, or at least the basis of an argument, for PCNA to step up. If you are under warranty now all it will cost you is your time.

I believe I have the same thing, on a 997.2. So far the suggestion is that it's the purge valve from the EVAP system on the inlet manifold being a little noisy. My symptoms are it starts 1 to 2 minutes after you start the car from cold. Goes away after 15 to 20 minutes of running. Can only hear it inside the car at idle/just above idle. It's also there when you start the car from hot and actually seems to be louder then.
If it really goes bad it should throw a code. Until then I have to live with it as, apparently, the engine has to be dropped to get to it as it's on the passenger side of the bulkhead.
It's one of those sounds, once you have heard it....

My 2012 GTS ticks as well. It seems normal to me. I asked the service folks at Stead Porsche Walnut Creek to check it out when I was buy to "visit" for a new tire and they said it was expected, present in all the 2012 997's, and some of the 991's as well.

I won't put words into the OP's mouth but I took his "when stopped" to mean idling - at least that's when I hear the ticking. The noise you describe is a hollow tinny ticking, which I always hear when the ignition is turned off (and is very different), while I think the one we are talking about (those of us with the noise) is more of a clicking or tapping valve sound. Either way, thanks for the input.
