Thanks guys...I was actually thinking the MINI but was concerned what the persona around the car would be. "Chicks car" After hearing the great feedback on the MINI that may be my choice. Debating between the MINI hardtop or the S. BTW I am getting rid of my 2011 G37x coupe, yes I am kind of a car junkie I switch every 2 years or so. :-)

pirchryn - I assume you'll drive both a regular Cooper and a Cooper S before you decide. The S version is around 180 HP now; much quicker feeling than the non-S. Also, experiment with the "sport button" ON and OFF.

+1 to the Audi A3. Perfect combination of handling, power and lots of room. Back seats fold down and its like a little SUV. I drive mine about 23k per year and may buy another one next year.

I don't view either the Mini, or the new Fiat 500 as a chick car. The VW Beetle, yes. But those two, no.
I currently have a beat-up 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 150k miles as a daily driver, but if/when it finally dies, I would seriously look at a Mini or the Fiat.
What I'd like to have is an all-electric Tesla S for Bay Area driving, but of course it's not out yet and isn't exactly inexpensive. Maybe in a few years after they get some benefit from economies of scale and competition.

Cooper S is a pretty nice driving car, at least a few years ago when I last took one out.
I too will be shopping for a second car in a few months when parking permits. I need it for utility, daily runabouts and for work. I've been thinking cheap as my goal is to pay off this C4S and get ready for a second one.
I am looking at 2012 of all - Chevy Cruze, Tahoe, CR-V, Prius and likely some others.

135i is a great inexpensive sporty DD. Additionally, a $2,000 ECU flash from Dinan turns it into a totally different beast!
