Default Please help identify this part

.. actually I know what it is. It's a post that's in the throat of the engine-side outlet of the airbox. I changed my air filter today and found that i was broken and hanging on by a thread. I pulled it the rest of the way off so it wouldn't get sucked into the engine. I have no idea how it was broken unless it was me jamming my hand in the throat to clean it with a rag but I'm pretty gentle when doing this.

I'm wondering what function this part serves. Is it just a post the prevents large junk from getting sucked through the airbox into the engine? as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to have a reason for being there.
